Do not budge. If people say they like the cake she will tell them how she talked you down. Then everyone will start pulling this when they order. It will just be a slippery slope.
This is soooo true!!! I had someone try that crap with me once, to try and badger me down and I told them my work is specialized and that's what it costs, compared to them going to a 'real' bakery they are getting a great deal. It always amazes me that brides don't think twice about spending $$$$ for a fabulous dress but then don't want to spend 10 cents for a beautiful cake, yet demand one anyway!! Go figure!!

I think you'll sleep better at night knowing you dodged the "bullet" with this bridezilla. December is along ways away and I'm sure many great cake orders will come your way to make up for this "loss"!!!
And what does she mean that she "thinks" $250 is reasonable? Does she know how to decorate cakes? The work involved???? otherwise, NOT!
I have to admit that I--the cheapest person alive--would never ever expect to pay less than 350.00 for all that work.
Tell her to go with the cheaper baker (who does not exist) and watch her be back in two weeks.

The fact that this bride was 70 mini MATCHING cakes. Duplicates of the large one. So you forgot to calculate how much extra it will cost to 'quilt' 70, 70!!!!!!!! mini cakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and extra for the dragees on those little cakes too.

yep and we did forget S&H aka delivery and set-up...gee and the way gas is going UP UP UP....that's got to be at least the $400 already mentioned if not even $500....

Oh Yes...Costco. My son has a Costco in Visalia, CA where he lives! I've been there...I've looked at the cakes! When I mentioned the "really cheap" prices (actually, the cakes didn't taste bad at all) my son said "Sure they are cheap. You have x amt of designs to choose from and all they do is write your name on the cake!" I'm SURE they will write her name on a sheet cake.....for a PRICE! LOLL

I would not touch this one with a barge pole. I never can understand how people can be so rude & stupid at the same time. If you are making a large cake & 70 mini's, you have grossly under quoted! If you are only making mini's.....you have still under quoted. Get rid of this one fast, there is trouble ahead.

Oh don't even get me started on her friend. She is just as clueless as her. At first she wanted a fondant cake for a 100 with calla lilies. She's having 150 guests but wants to save some $$. So I have no problem with that, and I do quite agree that she does not need that much cake since they are having a dessert buffet. I quoted her $360 on a 6",10", 14" rounds plus 3 lilies. I then received a phone call from the mother and again stating that they should get a deal blah, blah, blah... Maybe this time they just really need a cake for 75 people. I said ok no problem, we can work around that, just have smaller cakes instead. I then emailed the daughter some pictures for inspiration and she liked the concept of the cake below (I believe its from sugardelites). I explained that even if I make the three tiers in the smallest combo possible, the servings would still come up to 120 with all those satellite cakes. I quoted her $450 for that and never her from her again. Bon! Good riddance!
Honestly, looking at the cakes I've seen you should be able to charge whatever you want for your cakes. I seriously think you are under charging. Maybe you are under estimating your talent. I hope to be half as talented as you when I grow up as a decorator

"Attention Mom: I did 43 weddings last year (2006). From May to October, I didn't have one free weekend. I don't NEED to discount anyone to get add'l business. My calendar is full with my REGULAR pricing. Paying me less money for more cake is NOT doing me a "favor". See ya!" 
Stick to you price! Stay strong! You do quality work, and 70 mini cakes is A LOT OF WORK! If she's that aggravating on just this issue, imagine what will happen after the wedding when she "doesn't like" something about how the cakes were made. Even if she pays the price, she'll probably want a refund for something!

WOW, she is getting a SUPER deal. I charge $4.00 for my cupcakes, if i had to make mini cakes no matter how simple they'd start at $10 each, i worked out that the price you're quoting only coveres the main cake. The lot, if i was making it would come to $1500+, i'd have to hire someone to help me.

If she comes back and says that she still wants it, tell her that complaining just cost her an extra $300, so the price is now $660.

Your friend's cake minimum $600 but she's your friend and I can see you wanting to give her a deal.

She is being totally unrealistic. I wouldn't be surprised if you'd have close to 2 days solid work just to decorate 70 cupcakes. That is going to be pickier than doing the original cake. I hate minicakes! Too fussy! No business is in it to barter.... their in it to make money, as you should be. Tell her you're a professional and as such you don't barter. I'd also ask her what type of design her friend's cake is going to have. The design is what is labor intense so why shouldn't you charge for it?
Ok, Iv'e watched this web site for months and this is the first time that I'm posting. But this time I feel strongly about the subject! THIS LADY DOESN'T HAVE A CLUE! Those cakes are gorgeous and she is getting a FABULOUS deal for all that work. Stick to your guns....there will always be more work available!
