I havent had a request for this but this is something that is done in South America for Quinceañera cakes. 15 ribbons are coming out of the cake for the girl's friends to hold on to and pull out of the cake, one of them holds a ring or some other trinket. Even though i have never done one of these, i know how they are done. There are two ways, you pick out the one you like best.
One is to put all the strings on your cake board, and the one with the bottle and then put your cake on top and decorate as normal. The other is to put one layer of cake on the board, then put your fillings, and on top of the fillings you put the strings and the bottle, and then put your other layers of cake on top, then you decorate as normal. The only trick here is that you need to decorate around the strings. It looks better than the previous method, but it is a bit trickier.
All the best with this one
Cheers

Down here in the southern US, a "cake charm pull" is a common custom. Since the cake charms tend to be small and flat, I just push them into the base of the cake right before piping the bottom border.

I've never heard of this before. I clicked on the top link beany gave and found a great idea for my sister's baby shower. I love the idea of everyone pulling out a charm to add to a charm bracelet. Thanks for the link.

This sounds like a lot of fun! It gives me an idea for a princess birthday cake! I'm going to look for some charms next time I'm at Michaels! Thanks for posting the links too- love the second one w/the list of charm meanings.
