I took the advice from some of the members here to find contact paper to use on cake boards. I had found some cheap that looked like marble. I decided to try to use it last night and after I put it on the board, I was amazed at how great it looked. DH even looked at it and was surprised. He said "That's cool!" What a great way to add a little pizazz.

Hello Barefoot Contessa,
Could you please tell me what brand you use? Or what exactly would I be looking for when I go to the store. I do a lot of 1/2 sheet cakes and I go through fanci foil like crazy. If you don't mind sharing or anyone out there that has any ideas of whatelse I could use. That would be great....Thanks Kim

Hi Kim-
You can buy all sorts of contact paper at Wal-Mart. It is found in the housewares section. Another name for it could be self-adhesive shelf liner. I love the idea of the marble, though I have never tried it. I usually use wrapping paper to cover my boards and then I put clear contact paper over that.
You can get a large roll of contact paper that will last you 4 or 5 times longer than a roll of fanci-foil, and it is cheaper (like $6).

I am very careful with my fanci-foil and usually only use it for wedding cakes.

Hope this helps!

Brandi

Brandi.....
OMG!!!!! I didn't even think about that as a cover for my boards. I am new to the site and I have noticed different people talking about the contact paper. However, it never registered until you broke it down for me. LOL....Now I have to ask my mom to go to Walmart and ship it to me. Now the clear contact paper is it in the same area with the other contact paper? Will she be able to find it all at Super Walmart? I am really excited about this. Now I can make my board match my cake theme....I feel like a kid in the candy store....Thanks Kim

I've used wrapping paper, fabric, contact paper...all sorts of stuff. I love finding wrapping paper that matches the theme of the cake.

The clear contact paper is in the same area at Wal-mart as the other contact paper. Its hard to tell it is clear because you can see the paper you peel off the back through the roll of clear. It looks like a roll of white with blue lines (kind of look like blue-prints) on it. It will say clear on the label.

The idea of the marble is cool too. Maybe for girly cakes I'll use the floral stuff. Hmmm, we may be onto something here. This seems much simpler than wrapping in paper and then clear over it. Sometimes a certain character wrap or something comes in handy though.

Thanks for the ideas fellow cakers.

I am glad we could help with some new ideas. That's what CC is all about!

Yes, you can find clear contact paper in the housewares dept. at a Super Walmart!

This kinda opens up a whole new world of creative cake boards. Have fun!!

In Canada, you can purchase this at the Dollarama Stores for $1 a roll. Check out your favourite dollar stores, you may find it a lot cheaper than at Walmart.

Well the contac paper that I use is meant for lining kitchen shelves and such, so I cannot see why not since technically it will come into contact with food when placed on kitchen shelves and such, dishes too.
The glue is on the other side and when you cut this stuff, you would really have to cut hard to cut through the plastic.
The clear contac is used by elementary schools here to cover textbooks and such and since children tend to have their hands in their mouths if there was any health issues, they would have come up by now. The clear is actually graphed off to be used for book covering.
