Help - What's Best Method For Chinese Dragon On Cake??
Decorating By AngelWendy Updated 18 Apr 2006 , 7:03pm by gummysgirl
If you wanted to make a Chinese dragon on a cake, what would be the way you'd do it ?? What would you recommend to someone who has not ever tried any of these methods? What is the easiest and most fail-proof way to do a big dragon on a cake? I'm thinking - figure piping, buttercream transfer, piping gel transfer, cutting out fondant, other?
Note -
I do not have access to edible ink printer and I need to make this tomorrow or Saturday to deliver Sat. night. I thought I had another week, but the bday is April 3rd, not 8th. Oops!
I think I'm going to make the big shell shaped cake into a large fan and then hoping to decorate it with a dragon, if I can figure out how to make one. I have gold luster dust that will be great on it, but what on Earth should I make it with/from? HELP, please???
Any other suggestions on this cake appreciated, including completely out of the box other kinds of ideas for Chinese Theme cake. Thanks!!!

I would say piping gel transfer. Calidawn has a tutorial on how to do it. Check under her profile. It wouldn't look right w/ bct. You could do it w/ fondant but that would be a lot of work & sounds like you don't have time. Good luck AngelWendy!
Hey, I found this really cool cake: http://www.sweetthangcakes.com/special_dragon1.htm -it looks like it was made out of fondant
I bet you could do this really easy..
http://www.foxchapelpublishing.com/productdetails.cfm?PC=1220 -this a book that has dragon drawings in it, to the left of the pic of the book it has a link called Look Inside... it shows what's inside and you can enlarge the page and I bet you could print it out and make a pattern from that
I came across an article on the internet a couple months back that demonstrated how to pipe the coolest chinese dragon on top of a cake. Now I can't find it ! I'm going to keep looking but if anyone finds it, I think it might help.
Well.. Lisa I could not find that article...but I found some more cool pics!

I am so sorry! I got confused. I look at too much stuff and can't always remember where I find it. I found the figure piped chinese dragon cake. It was in my ACD Feb/Mar issue pp 28-33. It was done by Don Lundy and it is awesome. If anyone has that issue take a look. AngelWendy...if you want, I can scan the pic and email it to you so you can see if it's something you might be interested in.
BTW m0use...those are cool pics
Yes, Lisa, please do mail it to me. I would appreciate that! I appreciate the links from you, m0use, too.
Hey, I came up with this idea of doing a cupcake dragon cake instead of trying to draw one on a cake. Then I think the hardest part would probably be the head. Any ideas on that?

I PM'd you the pic.
Also, here's instructions to do a 3D dragon.

Hey AW,
Check out my website. Our "mascot" is a dragon. More Japanese then Chinese. But if you can use it, feel free, all we ask is that you give us credit!!
I tried the chinese dragon in ACD. It wasn't too hard to do once you got the hang of the technique, but I definitely need more practice in shaping the dragon!
It was fun to do! If you pipe the colors into the bag as shown in the instructions, they really do come out piped like that! I was amazed!
Ok, I'd be happy to look. What's your website URL? Thanks!

Just wanted to show the finished Dragon Cake I made and since I'd asked in this thread, I thought I'd post it here. I used these directions, basically - http://webmall1.com/sweetdreams/dragoncake.htm
The little girl loved it! Still wish I'd been paid for it or invited to the party (it was family), but hey.. at least it was appreciated.
see told you you could do it!!!!! looks cute as heck....I can see him in a variety of colors too!!!
Thanks for posting the pics! It is really helpful to see how a cake is put together before it's decorated They didn't invite you to the party!?!Shame on them! I am glad they appreciated it at least. I think you did a good job on making him look more like a Chinese dragon too.
That is a really cool cake! It gives me good ideas for future b-day cakes for my boys. I agree they should have paid you or at least had you at the party. Hopefully they told everyone who the baker was so your name gets out there!
AngelWendy~
