A smash cake is a little cake typically made for the 1st birthday in addition to a larger cake. It's for the little one to "smash" and eat or in most cases rub all over their face, their hair, their clothes.....!

It's a small cake for a 1 year old's birthday, that you give to the birthday baby to 'eat', but it usually just ends up getting 'smashed', lol. I guess that's where the name came from.

You usually make the regular b-day cake, then a small 3" or 6" cake for the baby.

If you look under my photos, the 3 tiered strawberry shortcake cake was for my dd's birthday party, and the top tier was actually only 3" round, and I used that for the smash cake.

I think Walmart introduced the idea here. It is a new thing for us Hoosiers.
