I want to make a cupcake cake for my son's 5th party at school. Any tips for getting the icing level? icon_smile.gif

The best tip I can offer is make sure your cupcakes are as level as possible and as close together as you can get them. Keep your icing spreadable but not as thin as you would make for a regular cake. Here is a great website with a tutorial for cupcake cakes:

I just made one for the first time and it was a blast...I made sure to try to measure out the same amount of batter into each cup so they would all be about the same size then used a heavy baking tray when they came out..I put it on top of them so that it would flatten the cupcakes also...I put the tray on them for just a minute or two and it did the trick..this way when I iced them it was already pretty level..then just smoothed the way I do for a cake.

I use an ice cream scoop when doing cupcakes. That helps to have most of them the same size. If I have some that are a little taller I put them together in the middle, and just try to build out from there to the shortist. When I ice it you can't tell they are different heights at all. As was said you want to try to get them as close as you can to each other and you can use a dab of icing under them to get them to stick in place on the board.

While they are still in the cupcake tin I put a heavy cutting board ontop for about 5 minutes right after they come out of the oven.This flattens them all down to the same height.
