Hi Everyone,

This is my second time working with gumpaste.

I made the gumpaste and I added to much water, it was very sticky.

I added some cornstarch to try and thicken it up, now it is to soft.

Is there anything I can do to get it right or is it a flop?

TIA[/b]

Stephanie,

I was going to make some gumpaste decorations this weekend and was told to add a little more powdered sugar so it would not be too sticky. Are you using the Wilton mix???

Hi traci,

It is the CK brand...all I had to do was add water and grease the bowl lightly.

Do you think that the cornstarch has ruined it?.

I think you are ok if you did not add too much. I would try adding a little powdered sugar at a time and see if it becomes less sticky. I have the wilton brand and plan to use it next weekend for my daughter's birthday cake. Have you ever tried the wilton brand???

Also...I think you need to let the gumpaste mix rest inside a ziploc bag for at least 15 minutes before you try to use it. Good luck! icon_smile.gif

I made it Monday night and tried to use it this morning.

Not sure how much cornstarch I used...kept sprinkling it in until it wasn't sticky.

I tried Wilton and didn't particularly care for it.

I also tried CK Royal Icing mix last night and I only had to add water and it only cost $2.29 for a 1lb bag...much cheaper than doing it the regular way. So far I like it, made letterings with it.

The next time I go to the cake supply store...I will have to look for the royal icing mix...sounds really easy!

What kind of gumpaste decorations are you making? If you have any left over fondant, you might be able to mix some gumtex in and make your decorations with that instead.

Now I am having second thoughts about using the gumpaste mix! I am wanting to make some stars and attach them to floral wire. I am planning on having them stick out of the top tier...I do not want to end up with a big sticky mess! icon_biggrin.gif

Traci,

The fault was mine...like a dummy, I added to much water. The mix itself is real ease to do.

I wanted to try making a bow for the baby shower cake I have for next weekend.

Will try adding some sugar to see what happens.

Wow...I just looked at your new pictures and they are the bomb...sorry I missed them when you posted them. Your cakes always have that neat look to them.

What edible machine do you use? Since Santa didn't bring mine, I guess I have to use my cake money to buy it myself icon_cry.gif .

You could try adding a bit of fondant to your gumpaste, that may help the consistency!

I use the canon ip3000. I just love it! I got it at Office Depot. I know they are discontinuing this printer...but one of my cake friends was able to find it online. The ip1500 and ip4000 are also good. It is so worth the money...as you can see from my photos...I use it A LOT!!!!!

Anyway...I also LOVE your cakes and can't wait to see the baby shower pic! icon_smile.gif

traci,

I'm just doing the bassinet in the 11x15 instead of the 9x13.

The mother doesn't know the sex so I'll be using the girl and boy baby.

Do you have any ideas on the blanket?

The person giving the shower is doing all the decorating in pink and blue.

What a creative idea! I love the pink one that you did. thumbs_up.gif I think I would do the blanket with any combination of pink and blue. I will have to remember this the next time I have a request for a baby shower cake! icon_biggrin.gif

That's alot of cake because I have to do a 12" round for the pillow part cut in half.

She is feeding about thirty to forty and want them to be able to carry some home if they want to.

Do you think this will feed that many with some left over?

I think that will be plenty! I have customers like that too...once they have ordered a cake from me...they always want left overs on the next one! icon_wink.gif

I am sure that everyone will love it! icon_smile.gif

I think what did it is the cornstarch, it's better to add a little more of the powdered sugar because it's part of the ingredients. I made gumpaste couple of times and it's pretty forgiving when it's comes to measuring, I use wilton's gum-tex and this time I doubled the gum amount (I'm bad) just to see what type of effect it'll have :I'm assuming it'll make it more elastic and dry faster. Rescuing the situation with fondant is a wonderful idea icon_lol.gif, you might want to add a tiny bit more gum powder to give it more elasticity.
