OK, so this weekend my bf's best friend from Vegas will be visiting and we are going to celebrate his bday. He loves The Simpson's but my bf said I should make him a dirty cake, so I decided to do one of those ones where it looks like a stripper is jumping out of a cake and the stripper will be Marge Simpson. icon_biggrin.gif
So, I found one cake on here that I loved and PM'd the creator but haven't heard back so I thought I would put it in a forum.
This will be the first time making a figure that needs to stand up... only made the little sleeping baby before. These are my questions:

1. Should I sculpt that figure around a woden dowel so it's easier to make it stay upright and I can stick it in the cake easier?

2. How do you attach the arms? Toothpicks? How do you make it look like they are blended into the body though?

3. How should I attach the boobs and hair (since Marge's hair looks like a bunch of grapes)? Just frosting?

4. I am planning to cover the cake itself in fondant as well. To make the look of her breaking thru the fondant.. should I just cut the fondant and curl it outwards or cut out separate pieces of fondant and attach them to the cake? Hope that makes sense.

I am really nervous about making this and making it actually look like the character and not something a child made out of play-doh. Any help or pointers will be appreciated.

i try to help you, but i know some people would do it differently, this is how i would go about it.

1. i wouldn't make it on the dowel ( dowel could by accident just go through the whole body and break your figure

2. i would try to make as much possible from one piece of fondant. then you wouldn't have to glue the hands on. toothpicks will not really help with attaching the hands. instead make a fondant glue ( few drops of water and some fondant mix it up to a thick paste you could add a little gumtex there as well. just make sure the paste is thick and sticky)

3. you could do it from fondant as well.

you could pm the picture to me so maybe i could help you little better.

4. and for the braking through the fondant , i will attach picture ( sorry about the quality but it is drawn on the computer with a mouse so...)
this is how i would do it ,

Since I don't know how big of a Marge you are looking for, I can only offer what I can. I can't find the photo you are talking about. If I were making it here is what I would do.

Personally I would not use the dowel all the way through either because as Liis said it could slide down and poke right out of the top. Depending on how big she is you could put smaller, thinner dowels at the base of her to keep her from toppling over.

If you are making her barbie doll size then you could always use a gumpaste mold http://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product.asp?pn=MC9415 . I have used the molds and attached my arms with toothpick pieces. I make sure I remind everyone that it is not edible because of the toothpicks inside. Better safe than sorry.

The hair? Hmm...I guess I would form it like a helmet and then mold it to her head as best as I could.

Here is a pic of kind of what I was thinking, but not the legs, just her popping out.

I tried finding the Debbie Brown book of Naughty cakes everywhere to see if she has one in it and I can't find it anywhere out where I live. I don't know if maybe someone else has the book to see if she has one or not in there and can help off that as well. Maybe I will put another forum post on that.

I was looking to see if I could find something on the internet regarding figure making but to no avail. I have made small fondant figures but nothing as big as the one you are looking for help on. Based upon smaller figures I would make the torso, head, hair and arms seperately and attach them using either small toothpick pieces or spaghetti. I would make the head more of a cone shape on top to hold the hair and not have it wobble when I put it on. I would also attach everything with a bit of fondant glue. Once everything was dry and thoroughly attached I would then smooth the fondant over the attached areas to make it look like it was all one piece. As for her tatas I would roll out balls and place them in the appropriate spot using the fondant glue. I certainly am far from being an expert on this subject.
