Wow...that's a tough one...I credit you because I don't know if I could have done this. The work is impeccable but I got a headache looking at the colors.... icon_biggrin.gif

Well I think it's lovely... (okay, when you convert it to grey-scale... LOL)

Seriously though, it's not easy to do your best on a cake you KNOW is going to be ugly! My "Dead Crow" cake was a similar experience for me... she wanted it to look gross (and taste gross too which just about killed me to do... so I baked as usual and she added tabasco sauce...eww!) That cake was done as a result of a bet... the loser had to "eat crow."

What separates an amateur from a professional is someone that can take something that's horrible and turn it in to a work of art.

Call me crazy, but I actually really like that! It looks like the walls of a garden with vines creeping over it...

WOW. Seen in black/grey & white, that is such a gorgeous cake. Anyone would be proud to have that in their portfolio. You did a wonderful job. The colours definately took away from the effect. When I first looked at the colour picture, I didn't even notice the decorating, all I saw was the colours, but without the colours to distract, you can clearly see how talented you are.

I agree... the colors are horrible, but you did a great job none-the-less. Goes to show you that everyone has different ideas of what beautiful is!

I also agree that the customer is always right... give them what they want, just be sure not to get any recognition for the goofy stuff. You made the right choice not leaving business cards behind. : )
I bet you high tailed it outta there once that cake was set up!

Your work is gorgeous! As far as the colors...well it would look good as the mascot for a football team somewhere maybe... haha. But the details are lovely. You know if all her wedding colors were that hideous, the cake probably did actually "look good" in the course of the wedding. icon_biggrin.gif

Nice job.

If it makes you feel any better, I went to a wedding where the colors were red, white and blue, which was fine I guess. but the bride decided to use fourth of July type patriotic decorations for a wedding in march. : ?

It seemed like one of those Christmas in July parties or "something is wrong with this picture' games in Highlights magazine.

[quote="VACakelady"]The bride did happen to call me 2 months later to tell me that she got rave reviews on the cake icon_confused.gif

That's probably one of those times when the bride caught people staring in disgust and they felt obligated to say something......."ohhhh....what an interesting cake......and sooo beautiful!!" hahahah, the customer is always right....hey if she was happy then that's all that matters. Judging by the feather cake topper my guess would be that she's a middle aged woman on her second or third marriage.....so hey!! maybe she's finally being adventurous.....you did a great job on the cake regardless of the colors...you did your part, it's not your fault that she picked out horrible colors right?? LOL

I just picked up another wedding cake with the same setup except with round cakes. Thankfully this couple has decent colors... ivory and red.

How do you spell T A C K Y.? You did a great job even though your heart wasn't in it. I had to do one that I didn't want to do, a few years back, and the end result was terrible. It was not even up to par with my other cakes. I was ashamed of the thing. But they loved it. Like someone else said,"there is no accounting for taste".

Well, it's definitely not something that I would choose for myself (or anyone else), but I don't think it's atrocious either. I could've done without the white, but alone I don't think it's awful. Good job on the decorating, btw!

Hmmm, I think it's all been said, but I will add that it's just so...you know what, I have nothing. The workmanship is great. icon_smile.gif

I'm just wondering...do people still order cakes with stairs and fountains?? I think someone should start a topic with the cakes that they wish people hadn't ordered. I, for one, would LOVE to see what else is out there.

You did a good thing. As long as the bride was happy....you did good.
