Yet another Wedding Cake question!

I know there are tons of dicussions on wedding cakes...but I have a couple of more questions that I don't see posted..

1-Pricing. I was planning on pricing per slice. My question is, do you charge extra for the anniversary cake? (I was thinking maybe 10 dollars?) Also, the plastic cake seperator, pillars, things like that..do you charge them for these or do you ask them to give them back to you after the wedding? Do I charge a deposit for them as well? (they can get expensive!) How do you get them back? Do you ask the caterer?

2-Delivery. I have two vehicles..a small little sports car and a large pick up truck. Neither one of them works well for delivery a wedding cake (they are fine for birthday cakes, etc) How do you delivery your cakes? Do you assemble them at the reception hall?

3-Serving. I have a certain way that I cut my cakes, do I provide this information or do I ask the caterer how they are going to cut it? How do you handle the cutting of cakes?

I really am surprised how many brides are approching me for their cakes! (I guess summer is around the corner..) I don't have any references yet, since these weddings haven't taken place. How do you approach the reference question, without sounding like a newbie? icon_biggrin.gif

Hey!
1. Some people charge the same for the top tier, others do not. Just depends on what you want to do. You might use it as an advertising thing-"get your top tier free" I know most people charge a deposit and a rental fee for any "hardware" that you might have to replace and that will account for wear and tear. Most people request they be returned by a certain date and time(clean and in good condition, of course). All this would need to be specified on the contract.
2. some people deliver assembled but that can be tricky so others assemble once they get there.
3. I think if you have a different way of cutting the cake you should share it with whoever is cutting the cake so the couple get what they are paying for.

Do you have some pics of some wedding cakes you have done? That's what I looked at when I was looking for a cake when I got married!

1. Usually the top (anniversary) tier is free. In my area, the better bakeries usually plan on serving the entire cake at the reception and then provide a free (and freshly baked) anniversary cake--they don't deliver the free 1 year anniversary cake, you have to go pick it up if you want it. I personally have never heard of charging for the anniversary cake, maybe that's a regional thing.

As far as the pillars, boards, plates, etc...I charge a deposit equal to the cost of replacing said items. The deposit is refunded upon the return of the items by whoever the bride chooses for that resposibility by the date specified on the contract (usually within 72 hours). Some brides choose not to return the items--when you're paying hundreds of dollars for a cake, a few more bucks is worth the convenience of not having to keep track of and return cake supplies. But you need to list in the contract what is under deposit--specifically how many pillars, plates, whatever.

2. I have a minivan. I deliver unassembled. I also bring extra tulle and fabric in case the table isn't decorated. Bring your camera to photograph the finished cake in case someone decides to move the cake and it collapses, then you can show that the cake was intact when you left the reception site. If your car isn't suitable for delivering a cake I would try and find someone who could help you out and maybe trade cars for the morning or something.

3. The reception site is accustomed to cutting cakes. Even if you tell them how to do it, they will do it their own way anyhow. Save your breath, it will be ok--they do it all the time.

Thank you for a great post! That helps A LOT!!! I like the idea of taking the photo at the site as soon as you set it up...

I am slowly building up a contract with all the disclaimers! haha!
