Thanks! Nice work. Thanks also for posting the 2nd photo. They have already helped the wheels in my head to turning... icon_biggrin.gif

I did a Death Star for my hubby's 30th birthday using the sports ball pan on top of a 10in cake in my pics.

Thanks for the replys! For those of you that used fondant: what is the best way to add the BLACK color? The black in the photos seem to have a gloss to them...anything extra done to achieve that?

I started with chocolate fondant & airburshed the black over that (MUCH less colour, and chocolate fondant is SO yummy!)

I think I also brushed confectioner's glaze over one of them...

I just mixed my fondant a few days in advance.

except for my helmet which broke at the last minute so i used gumpaste and painted with iccing coloing over it ...worked out better that way ...

Thanks for all of the feedback. I decided to copy the artwork from my nephew's invitation. Since I would be traveling a little farther out than usual, I went with a cutout shaped cake and added raised details. Not as grand as a full 3 D cake, but safer to travel with.....The kids loved it and I had to laugh at the sight of a room full of 8 year olds with dark gray lips, teeth, and tongues after they had eaten all that black icing..... icon_lol.gif
