Ok, well last night I made a cake for New Years. There was a quarter in it and whoever got the quarter in their slice had good luck for the coming year. Anyway, I'm still have A LOT to learn in cake decorating, but the two things that REALLY bug me are:

1. Icing the cake smooth
2. Roses

I'll actually cry when I don't get those right (I'm only 12) But last night, it was REALLY smooth! I mean, it was still a little uneven, but it was my best cake yet! My mom even combed the sides!

Ok, I'm being boring, I'll just post a picture later, lol.

Welcome to Cake Central!

I just looked at your pictures and they're really good. There's a paper towel trick to get your icing smoother.

As for roses, a lot of people still have problems with them, myself included. It just takes a lot of patience and practice.

Your cakes look really nice. It's hard to believe that you are only 12, way to go and things get easier, as you go. It looks as if you have a great career in cake decorating ahead of you.

Wow, looks like you have a future as a real pastry chef......imagine what you'll be doing in one year, two years, and then 10 years! You have so much talent. Your cakes look great; keep doing them!! icon_smile.gif It took me at least 8 months to figure out how to smooth buttercream, and I'm 36. Age is relative; it's the talent that counts! And you have it!

Well most of my cakes I really don't post because they're...um, a learning experience, lol. The doll cake is the only one I really like. I can't post the picture until my dad gets home to fix the computer. -_-

Your cakes are great! Keep up the good work. I like to get the icing on my cake, get it pretty smooth then put it in the freezer for 15 minutes and then smooth it again. It works pretty good. I also use a spackler thingy ( you can find it in the paint stuff at Wal-mart and it's only like $1!!! It works great to help smooth the icing) Also you can try using an icer tip and #16 bag. That helps get the icing on the cake easier and makes it a bit easier to smooth out. At least I think it helps and they aren't too expensive! icon_biggrin.gif

First of all...YAY! I'm not the youngest anymore!! I'm 20.

I think you do a wonderful job! I was doing cake decorating at 12, but it was just helping my grandma around the kitchen. It's something that will always stick with you, believe me. Congrats on a job super well done!!

Hi kids!!!! Just a comment on the quarter....that's a Greek tradition, except we put it in sweet bread, called Vasilopita. The coin(always wrapped in tin foil) brings good luck to the finder. And we are all aware that there is a coin in the loaf so we don't bite until we look!

Is that where you got your idea from? You have a great talent! Congrats!

Yes adven68, I got that from the Greek tradition. icon_smile.gif I'm sorry to say that I can't post the cake now because my wacky computer didn't save it. *sigh* Oh well, thank you for the tips everyone!
