My darling brother-in-law made plywood boards with dowels to store my cake decorating tips on and then fitted them for a plastic drawer unit. Very easy to make too, it was my idea to make a flat board with dowels and his idea to fit them so I could store the tips dust free. I just love this. He made two boards with a few extra dowels that hold my 104 tips and then some. The nice thing is that they fit all sizes of tips. He used the drill to hold the dowel while he sharpened the ends with an electric pencil sharpener. The dowels were made to fit the holes in the plywood exactly so they didn't have to be glued in. One of my absolute favourite presents of all times because it is so practical and useful and thoughtful.

He did a great job. I had a similar idea a few months ago but never followed through on it. Like the design he did. I have boo-kues of "104 since I use this tip with kid's parties.

Haha, well I hate those plastic cases for the tips because they don't all fit in it, the plastic hinges break easily, the lid doesn't close unless they are all lined up correctly and I cannot tell you how many times they broke and the tips flew all over the floor. Hhmn, the cats think they are great toys to bat around too, grrhh.
Anyway, I was complaining about them a few weeks before Christmas and telling my sister about the tip tree that someone sells on E-bay. For me that wouldn't be practical because I would be moving it around and the tips would be falling off, plus the dust would get at the tips. So I had asked him about making a flat board and he came up with fitting them into drawers. He made the dowels long enough to fit the largest tips, of course you could have the dowels of varying heights. My sister listed all of the tips I have and enclosed the list in a plastic sheet protector, I had them listed on paper. Haha, I agree, I have several rose tips and star tips of the same sizes so I just have them lined up one behind the other now.
You could use styrofoam and just insert dowels into it too but I preferred the wood.
They had put extra decorating bags in one drawer and a couple of small trays to store the couplers in too. Very organized! I could put all of my colours in a drawer too.

I have put my colors in the drawer but they slide around and fall over. I think I may get a semi-thin piece of foam and cut holes the size of the color jars so they will fit snug and not fall over.

You know, I was just thinking, buying a styrofoam cone and putting dowels even plastic ones in it, on angles, like the tree that is sold on E-bay, would give you a really easy version of a tip drying stand. I tend to leave my tips on the counter at least overnight to be sure they are dry before putting them away.
They got me two sets of four each drawers that are stackable. I also recently bought a set of wire baskets in an aluminum frame that I store cake pans in, in a closet. These are handy because they are on wheels and you can really pack the pans in them. I keep the pans in clear plastic bags so they are dust free.
I agree, we are better off when we have all of these things organized otherwise it is really frustrating to spend time searching through cupboards and having things fall out!
Haha, the need to be organized, I think that is on a lot of people's New Year's resolution lists, year after year!

These are really terrific, Squirrelly, is your BIL going to patent them and sell them? Sure would be an idea that should be a good seller. I guess I will have to find somebody to make them for me, because I really do hate the plastic boxes too. Janice

I went shopping for all the stuff to make one of those. I got the 3 drawer unit (9.99) one large piece of styrofoam (3.49) and a package of dowels (1.49) Hubby was a sweetheart and put it altogether for me. Top two drawers are for the tips and my alphabet cutter set (we just pressed the letters into the styrofoam) The bottom drawer he cut holes for the pots of colors. It is all so organized!!! Thank you so much for the idea!! (and I also bought the styrofoam cone to make the tip drying station too!) About $15. total for the whole thing. icon_biggrin.gif

Nope, he isn't planning on patenting them. He was pleased that the idea went over so well on the cake sites though. I just love the man, he is always coming up with something handy!
I was thinking that if I ever had a dream kitchen I would have one large kitchen drawer with this set-up!
Glad this came in handy for people!
