I notice that Wilton doesn't make gold coloring. I have seen gold fondant on cakes before and I just wondered if anyone could tell me how to color my fondant gold.

Are you talking about a plain gold or a metallic gold? Americolor makes a gold gel color but for the metallic color, you paint it with luster dust. Hope this helps icon_biggrin.gif

ok I tried this the week before Christmas and it didn't work. I used lemon extract (60% alcohol), and mixed the lustre dust into the liquid. The mixture kept beading up like water on a newly waxed car. It just wouldn't work.

Did you use the real luster dust like you get from a cake supply? I use lemon extract and it works great, usually I use two coats.

I have been advised against using gold, that it is not edible. When telling clients that, they usually go for the white cake with gold trimmings that they can take off & keep.
So I have ever only made gold ornaments using lustre dust/gold powder either just dusted on or mixed with pure alcohol for painting.

Some people also use gold leaf. Gold that's pure or almost pure (22K - 24 K) is edible as it does not contain (or contain any significant amount of) other metals that are not food safe.

Gold leaf is expensive. But sometimes it's more practical to use it especially if covering a large cake.

I used luster dust that I got from a cake supply store. It just wouldn't work right. I even used a brand new brush because I wanted to make sure that nothing in the brush would mess up the decorations.

It was definitely luster dust. I thought I mixed it really well. I had about 1 t. of dust and 1 t. of extract (maybe a little less extract, didn't measure it exactly.)

Here's what I do to get a really good gold. Firt color your fondant yellow as it hides any missing spots better than white does (like wise if you want to use silver color your fondant grey first). Then mix your luster dust with lemon extract to about the consistency of nail polish. It paints on really well. HTH!

I mixed luster dust with almond flavoring and painted it right onto the fondant. It worked beautifully.

i used gold highligher dust, it works great. i always mix it with everclear instead of extracts because it dries quicker and gives the best results.

Yes americolor does make a Gold...It is not metalic but rather a gold color... not a poppy yellow..Gold is not edible and it is illegal to but in on a cake that is to be eaten in many places including California, this includes gold and silver dragees which are also illegal in CA
