Big Crack :-(

I am trying MMF for the first time. I have not done very much fondant. I got the MMF rolled out and picked it up with the wheel kind of folding it. When I got it on my cake I realized it had a big crack down the middle. Is there any way I can fix this? Maybe with water or something?? I wanted this cake to look good cause it is for my sister's BD.

About the only thing you could do is try to cover it with flowers or something so it won't show too bad .. I'm sorry to hear about how it cracked/tore on you .. I'm sure it will look beautiful and your sister will love it icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the idea. Maybe if she just looks at it from one side, it won't look so bad. I even had to cut out a piece and put another one on. Oh well, I know it will taste good.

Beecharmer,

Sorry that you had a problem with your MMF. Glad that you were able to fix it.

The same thing happened to me Saturday night when I tried to use my MMF that I had colored red to go on my Barbie. It cracked so bad that I had to take it off.

The uncolored fondant was fine, didn't give me any problems.

Can anyone tell me what could have happened?

I'm not sure but maybe it was a bit too dry or either a bit too thin ?? I'm guessing ... I know when I've done my MMF, those are usually one of the 2 reasons it tore ... if it's too dry, I slather some Crisco on my hands and massage it into the Crisco to make it a bit more pliable ... hth

ntertayneme,

I used the Crisco and it still cracked.

Could the red have something to do with it?

Assuming you are using powdered color, if you can add the color in the very beginning, it will help. However, if you have to add color near the end of the mix, hold back some of the powdered sugar, a cup or so. The fondant will still be a bit sticky.

If, once you get your color, it is still sticky, you can knead it a bit more with a bit more sugar. If you sift it over the ball of fondant, it will help prevent small lumps. Then let it sit a little while-the mixture will absorb some of the moisture.
