I start on the corners and work towards the middle of each side.. for me this has always worked much better .. hope this helps

It also helps to elevate the cake so the edges are free to hang down just a bit. I find squares are much easier than rounds, so if you have done a round, you can do the square, no problem.

Definitely lift the cake up! I still cannot believe how well it worked on my Baptism Cross cake! (and that had MANY corners!).
