I really do not care for the chocolate flavored wilton melts. The colored/vanilla ones are okay but ....

Has anyone tried any other brand of melts? The cake shop here has some and they seemed like they tasted pretty good, but are they as easy to use?

Anybody?

OMG Jescapades, there is no hope for any of us. When I open a Twinkie package I can smell the chemicals, just like Wilton's fondant.

There are people in white coats with a sedative ringing her door bell. She has gone completely nuts and they have come to take her away. The visitors in white coats hear her mumbling, "Wedding Twinkies oh no........" They tell her not to worry, they may not have Twinkie's at the hospital but she can have an Oreo cookie." icon_eek.gif

probably not and won't even try.

you're right -- they're mass produced little packages of sugar and fat.
but...some of us do like them (a wee bit too much!)

short of getting black cocoa and making your own fresh from scratch (which if anyone figures out how to do -- send me the recipe!) there just isn't an alternative.

(as for twinkie wedding cake -- ICK -- now a stack of Krispy Kreme donuts , well let's just say keep me FAR away from it for fear I'll eat them all!)

Marthjo1, I think CK products makes some but don't hold me to it (I'm going to double check this product) but a local cake decorating store made candy with it one year and gave out samples and it was very good. I'm not a candy person at all either. They made a crunch with peppermint and one with orange candy. Looked like peanut brittle...know what I mean? She told me how to make it (not a candy making person myself) but I think it was CK. Gonna check on that for you.

OMG icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif Jescapades icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif Look at those pictures!!!!!!!!

Twinkie and Krispie Kreme's wedding cakes.....She tried to shake the cobwebs of her mind as she sat at the luncheon table at the hospital totally calm with the valium shot they had given her earlier. She ended up tracing the message from John Lennon she pasted in her diary, "Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it." The attendant came by with the silver platter of oreo cookies and offered her one and then blackness swallowed her.

Soon, very soon, when she least expects it, they will introduce little yellow Peeps into her diet. Brahahahahahaha

I'm not a fan of Wilton candy melts either. What about Mercken's? That's what I usually get at the bulk food store for other chocolates. Is that the same thing as candy melts?

Try mixing the CandyMelts with real chocolate chips. A 50/50 mix worked great for me. I didn't have a problem with "bloom" and the taste was very rich and chocolatey. (I'm not a fan of the Wilton's, either, but there aren't a whole lot of options around here.) CK also sells the discs, and I use their "super white" a lot (they really are much whiter than the Wilton).

I finally got a chance to make my awareness ribbon chocolate covered oreos so I figured I'd share.
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_613753.html

I also did a bunch of the smiley face ones for a graduation party...
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-photo_613783.html

Once I got the hang of them, they are very easy! The problem with my first batch was that I was trying to spoon the chocolate into the mold, but with all of these I used a piping bag and they were SO much better!

Your cookies are fabUlous! How are you getting them so smooth? Are you molding the cookie or dipping it? I tried dipping it and it left runny marks on the cookies and they were not perfectly circle.

BTW, for my molds, I use the plastic bottles that can be placed in hot water or the microwave. So when I'm finished I just put the cap back on the bottle and there is nothing to clean up. They sell 12 of them in a pack at Michaels and Joanns for about $10.

I use a mold that I got at www.spinningleaf.com

I use a piping bag with the tip cut off to about a 2 or 3 tip to fill in the ribbon, let that set, then use a different piping bag cut to a 5 or 6 tip to fill the mold about a 1/4 full, push the oreo in (careful not to push it in too far or it will show when unmolded) and cover with more chocolate.

I've tried using the bottles but I didn't have as much controll with the small details.

I just pour the chocolate into a measuring cup with a "pour spout" and use that. Pour into the mold about 1/3 full, rattle on the table to get rid of air bubbles, push in the Oreo, pour to fill, and do a final rattle. Pop the mold into the refrigerator for 10 minutes, then turn the candies out onto a dish towel. Quick!

i also find, especially in hot weather, that it's best to use a white cotton glove to unmold, paper and/or package the cookies. i had a woman ask me one time, if a mark on the top of one of my plain oreos was a finger print. (it was the circle on top of the cookie when it separated from the mold). i was glad to be able to tell her i never touch the cookies, i always use white cotton gloves.

I can't take any of the credit, I got the idea from this thread. I LOOOVE the molds though. I'm going to buy the plain ones and then add small chocolates to the top for all sorts of occasions.

Post pictures when you do yours twooten!

I have to share my experience with spinning leaf as I am so overwhelmed with the company. I had purchased 1 mold a long time ago and just loved it. I emailed them recently to ask them if I could share their name with 2 local cake and candy suppliers. I volunteer for a camp for handicapped kids and we put on a big annual fundraiser at Christmas each year. We wanted to make the oreo cookies for this but couldn't really afford to spend too much on molds. I thought if our local suppliers carried the molds, we could buy one here and there without so much shipping. A few days ago, a big box arrived at my door and it contained 1 of every chocolate mold that they make. I still get teary eyed when I think of what they did. We will make all kinds of cookies for the fund raiser and the kids will use them at camp next summer to make treats for their parents. It is wonderful to know that there are still kind people out there. Please support this wonderful company.
Lily
