I put a couple drops of lemon extract in a custard cup and mix in some dust then paint it on. I add more extract when it dries up.

Lemon Extract should work, not juice. That is what I use, and works everytime. Plus, check and make sure it is Luster Dust and not Shimmer dust. I made that mistake.

Wilton makes a shimmer dust, that when sprinkled on makes things shimmer. Luster dust is usually bought at a local shop, and not at a Michael's. Not sure of a web site for luster dust, but I'm sure someone on CC does. Sorry not more helpful. OK, just did some more looking and came up with www.thepartyworks.com. They have a whole page on Luster and Shimmer dusts, and you can buy some.

I have used vodka and everclear for painting with luster dust. I tried the wilton shimmer dust and did not care for it. It gave my design a sand like appearance. I do however love the wilton edible glitter...it is so sparkly! icon_smile.gif

Hi there,

I don't know anything about shimmer and luster dusts, but I was reading that Traci loves the Wilton edible glitter. When I took my cake decorating classes my instructor told us that she has made that. I have yet to try it, but it sounds like it would work. She would mix egg whites and whatever colour she wanted and brushed this mixture onto waxed paper and let it dry. I just thought I would post this to save people some money. Now that I know how to make it, I think $5.00 (CDN) for that little bottle is outrageous !!! Anyway, just FYI, I guess icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for that tip...I will have to try this!

Shimmer dust and luster dust are very different. Shimmer dust is used more for a sparkley effect. It can be purchased at michaels or hobby lobby. Luster dusts are more metallic and can be used for a painting technique. They are good for a metal or gold effect on cakes(like jewely or clasps on purse cakes) I have only seen luster dusts at cake supply stores. They can also be purchased online.

Lizzard1- I put a website in a previous post. It looks like a good web-site. Hope you find what you are looking for. icon_smile.gif
