I'm curious. I started to make some last year and then just kind of quit.
I had some pretty colors too. I guess I should haul them out and put them together this year, eh? LOL
That is so pretty, Fairytale! I collect eggs as my other hobby, lol. I wish one of you lived in Ohio!! I'd be a customer!!

I love farberge eggs
I am teaching a class in them next month, at the local supply store. They will also be panoramic.
My question is this, is it easier to handle the eggs when the window is on the end, or on the side?
Thanks!
Theresa
WOW!! You guys are like MIND readers !! I've been looking all day for the instructions to making the sugar eggs.... all I can find is for the "end" opening, and I want to do the side.... I did a few YEARS ago, but I don't remember how I did it........ PLEASE refresh my memory !!
I am just going to use an egg-shaped cookie cutter, and cut the center out of the side. I did this for the round Christmas ornaments my students made last season, and it worked out quite well. You just need to keep a soft brush and a spoon on hand, to clear out any crumbs that may be left behind when you remove the cutter.

Does anyone have the "recipe" of how much sugar to how much water to make the sugar mixture to put in the forms? My mom and I used to do it years ago and then we stopped. I tried it last year and wasted about a bag of sugar trying to get it right, it was either too dry or too wet. The instructions on how often to scoop out the sugar a little before letting it set again would be good-we couldn't remember that either.
Thanks!
I used sugar and water only, no egg white. The recipe I have is 5 teaspoons of cool water to 2 cups of granulated sugar. The recipe suggested allowing it to set for 20 minutes in the mold before scooping out. But I do not remember what website I got it from.

by side opening do you mean the ones that have the window in the side of the egg as opposed to the end? If so, I remember seeing instructions on how to do it in one of the latest Wilton yearbooks.... I believe they suggested moistening a piece of paper or something and setting it on the egg for a few before cutting through manually.
It caught my eye as I thought it would be fun to try - another item to add to my 'to-do one of these days' list
Yes, Moptop, that is exactly what I am speaking of. I have not done the egg shapes since Girl Scouts, and then we made the ones with the opening on the end. I would much prefer to teach my students how to do the ones with the large window, so they can display them without people having to handle the project to see the end result. That is why I asked about which way they are easier to handle when scooping and cutting.

Theresa, how are you planing on doing that ? The mold I have is about 6" in height....... split down the center lengthwise.... Both halves would have to be scooped out, right ? but then how would I get the "hole" in the side ? Do it BEFORE I scoop it out....... I"m so afraid I'll break it...
Thanks....
I didn't add egg whites but did add meringue powder - because up until that point, they'd just crumble. The meringue powder really helped keep them more stable.
I like the idea of the egg on its side with the hole on the end. That way you can put in a whole scene, and then plop the top shell on it and glue it together with royal icing.
But the side view ones are kinda neat too - I might have to try a couple of those.
I found this site on the sugarcraft site. Haven't tried it yet, just had it bookmarked for future reference.

As I mentioned earlier, I will be using an egg-shaped cookie cutter. I have not been provided the supplies by the shop owner yet, but I told her that I need a cutter which is about half the height of the egg.
After that, I will be using the instructions found on both the above link and on

When I first got married and became a step mom I decided to make suger eggs with the girls. They were so excited to make them. I really didn't know what I was doing and they didn't come out as beautiful as I had hoped. (The girls were 9 and 4 so that's my excuse!! haha)I promised we'd do it again and here it is 11 years later (how bad am I?) Just seeing this post has me all excited to try them again.
Theresa........ THANK you for that link....... I have spent the past TWO hours LOST in her work......... WOW !!
