I made the UGLIEST, most awful cake ever tonight for my daughter's school party tomorrow. I have the flu, I'm achy all over and I just wasn't in the mood. I want to be in bed (which is where I'm going very shortly).

I baked the cake--ok fine. I was putting away the stuff I use to make the batter and I dropped the entire container of oil on the cake. Smashed it on the outside edge. Decided the heck with it and spackled it with icing.

Made the icing--could not find my recipe ANYWHERE! Looked here on CC and pulled with I "thought" was the recipe--it doesn't taste as good--it's not the right recipe. Use it anyway because at this point I don't have the time or energy to make something else.

I actually did get the cake smooth. Was going for a starry night effect and ended up pouring a TON of the cake glitter on the cake--not the look I was going for. Couldn't make the star right. Didn't have the energy to figure out how to do sheep. Didn't have all the colors necessary to do the FBCT. Did the writing too low on the cake. Don't like it at all! I ended up telling myself that it's only for a bunch of 5 year olds--slap the icing on it and call it done! I'm telling you that Kailey could have done a better job and she's only 5!

I had such big plans for this cake--I just feel too much like crap to even attempt.

So the big question is--do I explain myself to her teacher or just let it slide and have her think this is the best I can do? This is the first cake I've ever done for her school and I was planning on making a grand entrance with it to hopefully get some new clients.

UGH! Thanks for letting me vent.

Lisa

I so completely relate to your story! I hate it when I have a great Vision for a cake and then it doesn't happen . . . because of illness, because of last minute stuff, because of my two year old . . . etc. It's always hard to show up with a cake that's less than what you feel you could really do. On the other hand, they're five, they will love it (the more glitter the better), and any teacher who works with five year olds certainly understands what it means to have a rough day!

Take care of yourself, get healthy, and start planning the gorgeous New Year cake you'll take to show that teacher what you can really do. Today, you survive. Tomorrow, you can impress!

Honestly, cake is cake. You can explain you are sick..but I think for the most part, she'll just be happy you've made a cake for her class. Maybe offer to do a President's Day cake in January (is it in January??) for the kids. I think you're second cake, with some much needed rest and recover time, will be awesome! I was just looking through the photo gallery and you do great cakes. As long as you know why it didn't come out that great, that's all that matters I think.

As long as it tastes good, right? icon_wink.gif

True--didn't think of that. I feel much, much better today. My little one had a flu-type bug on Sunday--I probably just had a touch of what she had.

A cake is just a cake and I do think she will just be happy to have one. I'll just deliver it and forget it.

Thanks again for letting me vent.

Lisa,

Sorry to hear that you are feeling bad.

I just went through the same thing last week and that cake totally wiped me out.

I was looking at your pictures and boy...you are great.

Just tell the teacher that it was Murphy's Law in play and I'm sure that she will understand.

If you want her to see the kind of decorating that you can do, make another cake, maybe for Valentine's Day.
