This doesn't qualify as a full-fledged disaster, but I finally tried to do a doll cake with the actual doll inside instead of the doll pick. I used two 9" rounds under the wonder mold, cored a hole in each with a plastic dowel rod, wrapped her legs in saran wrap, and when I put her in to her hips, the wonder mold cake split. How do I keep this from happening again? I see gorgeous cakes on here others have done . . . I used an Arial doll--not sure if she is bigger than Barbie--they looked similar. Thanks in advance for help--I would love to be able to get this to work next time!
Hi JamieL,
What type of cake mix did you use?
Did you cut the hole large enough?
Did the cake have time to settle before you worked on it?
Different things could cause this to happen.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
Maybe the cake was too warm when you worked with it?
Maybe you needed to cut a bigger whole in the cake?
Maybe you pushed the doll in too far?
Cakemix is so cheap right now. I'd just take 1 box of cakemix and bake another wondermold to figure out what the problem is.
I had the same problem the first time I did a Barbie cake with the "new and improved--more human-like" version of Barbie. They made her hips bigger and her boobs smaller!!
Well--her fat hips did the same thing to my Barbie cake.
The second time I did one with a newer Barbie--I pushed her in REALLY slowly. I also didn't push her in all the way--probably only to about the widest part of her hips. I then used bc to "build up" the dress to the area on her waist that I wanted. She is in my photos--it's the Cinderella cake.
I had done at least 5 of these with the "old" Barbie and never had this problem--it's Barbie's fault! lol!

VERY very cute cake Nati!! I may have to steal your idea for my daughter's bday in June. She is a tinkerbelle freak and I could SO make Tink out of that cake!

Thanks to everyone for taking time to respond! It's encouraging when you know you're not the only one! I'll keep practicing with it. How do the rest of you make the hole for the doll when you've done it successfully? Thanks!
I use my long serrated knife and cut the hole and then use a dowel to push the core out.
I have always tried to make sure my hole was cut big enough. I also think by using a dense cake recipe helps.
