My husband wants a German Chocolate Cake for his birthday and has requested to have something German on it (he knows I'm wanting to make a fancy decorated cake). However, I can't for the life of me think of what to put on it that is German. Plus, it's a German Chocolate cake. Lots of dark chocolate and coconut and pecans. My mind is just blank. PLEASE HELP ME! icon_smile.gif

His Birthday is on the 19th. So I have a couple of days to try to come up with something.

Susan

What about the German flag? I'm not sure of the colors but I know it's colorful so that could help off-set all the dark chocolate! Or a stien of beer. You could decorate a stein with any # of things! and have some white icing coming out of the top for the foam from the beer!

BEER STIEN!

fondant lind and handle..and the side can get as nutsy as you want.

if you google images "beer stein" you get lots and lots of ideas.

Prosit! (oder) Zum Whol!

THis is an idea that is all... not the best but when I think German I think either a Bratwurst with a bun. Or a Mercedes Benz logo. Which ever your man would like best!

Hey!!! I didn't even see that!! What are you going to buy yourself for our birthday this year? I always buy myself something small-that way I always get something I like and I get to do something for myself! (and since having a child I learned you don't get to do much for yourself anymore-lol)

Jane... Great ideas but I'm not so sure hubby would know it was a Bratwurst. If I make it it might look like ummmmm... Never mind! lol

YES! brats! (from Sheboygen of course and soaked in beer and garlic....)
and what a fun and cute cake that would make.

Would make a great 3-D cake! (use long loaf pan to get started)

just a thought...

glop the coconut together to make "onion pieces"
dye the pecans green for "relish"

and don't forget the mustard!

when properly cooked (first parboiled and then grilled to perfection*)

it is a wonderful mottled golden brown (little darker and lighter spots mixed in) with the dark marks of the grill on it.

* can ya tell I grew up on this stuff --- drat...now all this has got my salivating for some real Sheboygen brats!

Don't underestimate your skills.... That gingerbread house screams that you're talented enough to pull off the one that uses the 3-D car pan. Just skip the guy and stein.

The flag can be paper on a tooth pick (google image of german flag and save pic. Then print out and attach to tooth pick)

For logo...google image of logo; save pic; print out and cover w/ wax paper. Then trace w/ royal fondant....make at least 2 or 3 in case of breakage. Attach to toothpick w/ more royal and stick into cake

And for brat on top....use colored fondant....return to your Play-Do days and have fun modeling it. (can also paint after made from white fondant). Add toothpicks and skewer it to the cake too.

And little guy w/ stein is just play w/ the fondant: two balls, one color of shirt, one color of skin -- flattened. #1 tip dot eyes and mouth. Arm-- roll out small log and flatten. Stein just a small piece in square. and froth w/ tip #2 tip.

(if you've done polyclay figurines...all the same skills/techniques for modeling in fondant....except you get to eat the really bad mistakes!)

edited for spelling and grammar (as usual) grouse...why do I always catch the mistakes after and post and then still more after I edit?!?!

One more thought....

fill the cake w/ the coconut and pecans...then to cover the cake, instead of buttercream do a...

dark chocolate ganache!!!!

nice smooth finish you can detail w/ buttercream icing. if you want ganache to be true black, be sure to use black coloring especially designed for candy (made w/ oils so chocolate won't sieze --ie turn rock-solid)

(I make my ganache by blending dark chocolate candy melts w/ ghirardelli bittersweet chips in a 1:1 ratio and then following standrard ganache recipe)

How about finding out how to say Happy Birthday in German... that way it is written on a cake and it doesn't have to be so involved.
