My niece is having brain surgery(pituatary gland) next week. She is having a party tonight and I want to take a cake. But, I don't know what theme to use. Should I do a "Get Well"? She's a pharmacy tech so I thought about something with pills on it? This needs to be a quick cake, since I didn't learn of the party until last night and I'll have to squeeze it into my day. Any ideas? All suggestions are welcomed!!

I am so sorry to hear about your neice. I hope everything turns out okay for her. It is very early in the morning, and I have not had my coffee yet... but the only thing I can come up with is maybe do a cake with a balloon bouquet on it. And the make the balloons look like pills.

Sorry.... I will try to think of a few more.

here's an idea.

the Rx bottle could be made from fondant wrapped around a paper towel core and allowed to dry (tho' if pressed for time just use a real one.

fill bottle full of mini-m&m's and let them spill onto cake to "magically" make the message.

could have fun w/ message, such as:

Happy Nose Job! (this surgery usually done through the nose ....eeewwww/ouch)

or less silly....Here's to Health.

and of course that one we all get nagged with by the pharmacist...

"now take ALL your medicine"

or silly again.... Who needs pills -- give me chocolate!"

edited: spelling and grammar -- will I ever learn!?!

Oh Doug!

Thank you so much. That's a great idea. I am going to use it! I love the message-in-candy idea.

Thank you for taking the time to draw the diagram for me. You have saved my day and the party!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm off to bake a cake.

The cake looked like a 4 yr. old decorated -- it's not post-worthy! I had decided to use Doug's idea of the pill bottle "spilling" out a message and over to the side a balloon bouquet of pills.

I was running about 2 hours behind and only had 30 minutes to decorate the cake, I was very hungry(the kind of hungry that makes you shaky), tired and rushed. Instead of M&M's I was using Skittles. I couldn't even get them lined up! So I did a pile and used piping gel for a quick message. I used Twizzlers for the border.

When I got to the party she had 2 other beautiful cakes! One was from Culinard and had fondant holly with berries and poinsettias around the top. WOW! It was pretty. I was ashamed of my cake! But, she appreciated it and thought it was cute.

She's such a sweet girl -- please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

While the execution may not have meet your standards, remember --

It was a gift from the heart; it showed how much you care.

And think moms and dads....
What are some of the most treasured gifts you have ever received (a few of which are up on the walls and even the Christmas tree...

those are projects your kids made with macaroni, paste, glitter, who-knows-what-else and a hugh dose of...

L O V E.

If anything the "mistakes" make it all the more endearing.

Yours was of totally of LOVE, theirs purchased "georgious." Give me homemade w/ love over georgious any day!!!!

So....yes it IS post worthy!

(and nice touch with the twizzlers!)

edited for grammer/spelling as usual

Well said Doug! Please post the pic, I know we would all love to see it particularly for the story behind it. Never be ashamed of something you made with you own two hands!

Just a quick update on my niece...

She made it through surgery fine. The tumor was smaller than doc had originally thought it was. Something else that showed up on her MRI that the doc was concerned about was nowhere to be found! She's in ICU for the night and will be home by Christmas (which also happens to be her birthday).

Thank you all for your support and prayers!

LOL!

I've been thinking about it! It'll be something that's birthday-ish. And, I have all week to work on it!

She gets left out because of Christmas. It's always the combination gifts and cakes for her. I make a special effort to get her a birthday present and wrap it in birthday wrap. Maybe, I'll make a cake to match the wrap I use.

Again, thank you!

Update...

I went to the hospital yesterday to see my niece. She's doing good. Just has a headache, which is normal after brain surgery.

and...

while I was there, I saw a food container on her dresser. IT WAS PART OF MY UGLY PILL CAKE!!

When she was moved from ICU her mother asked her what she wanted..."I want Aunt Sheila's cake", she told them!

Not the beautiful Cullinard Cake with poinsettias and holly, not the 4 layer coconut cake crowned with dollops of frosting and chocolate covered cherries, the very cakes that made me feel so ashamed of my cake...

Lesson learned!
