Ok so I am cranky and hormonal and pg...haha....anyway was checking out Craigslist and found an ad by a lady who has a salon and she wants to do kids parties...she wants someone to make "unique cupcakes", about 2-4 doz/day during the week adn 4-8 doz on the weekends. They must be "made fresh daily", the person will have 2-3 days notice, and she is offering $1/2 minis or $1/regular cupcake.

I should have just gone on but no, I'm cranky and had to write an email kindly (sort of? hmmm maybe not..) showing her the math of how someone making cupcakes for that amount will be getting less than minimum wage for their time, esp if the designs are to be "unique". Also was saying how cake can be fresh even if its not made "fresh daily" as long as its only a few days ahead, etc.

Yeah I shouldn't have said all that, haha....and of course I got a snippy email back saying the grocery stores sell them for $1 for regular or $1.50 for gourmet and she thought before she went that route she'd try to find someone who wanted to do it for the same price...she says she's already had quite a response and has several "interviews" now...so next time I should just hit "delete".

So...I wonder if all her "responses" have done the math??? That is ALOT of work for not very much money!!!! Yeah next time I'll just hit "delete". haha.

some fool will take it on, and be sorry very quickly.

And, yes, delete can save you some frustration, but at least you tried.

At the bakery of the somewhat upscale grocery store near me, they sell their "unique" cupcakes (cupcakes with special things like gumpaste flowers, sprinkles) for $2.99. I have never seen a "unique" cupcake in a grocery store. I think this lady does not know what "unique" means.

lol sheesh some people! i seriously doubt that the gourmet cupcakes she was speaking of were really $1 each. i work at a very upscale grocery store and our cupcakes run $2.50-$3 each. people buy them because they are decorated beautifully. however, with the amount of labor we put into those little suckers, i think they are getting off with a bargain lol!! good luck!

I know you're cranky and hormonal and pregnant..but why aggravate yourself?

You had no dog in this fight...leave deluded people alone and you'll be happier for it.

I guess part of my retarded brain said "Oh they'll see your cakes and realize if they want quality that they were mistaken". Yeah right. haha.

OMG Kitagrl,
I saw and replied to the same post and thought the very same thing. You want to pay what????!!! What a rip off.
I'm not pregnant yet, but I am always hormonal and I'm so sick of cheap people!
I just booked a wedding cake for a woman who stressed over and over again how she's 'budget bride'. We negotiated heavily over the price of several different cakes. I normally don't budge on price, but she's a good friend of a wedding coordinator who gives me tons of referrals. After all is said and done, she casually mentions how she can't believe her budget has gone so high over $20K. WTF?!!! I just got married a year ago. My husband and I paid for everything ourselves and my budget wasn't even half of that. This b**** is complaining over a $500 cake after dropping $20K??
Next time I buy a car, I'm going to tell the salesman what my mortgage is so he'll feel bad and drop the price for me.
I really hate people sometimes. UGH!

I think I was almost more irritated at her demands than her pricing....I mean, okay, a buck apiece.... maybe there would be someone who would do it... but... "must be made fresh DAILY???" So she won't let someone bake all day on Monday and get them all done, she wants them slaving in the kitchen every day of the week for her buck apiece cupcakes? With only 2-3 days notice no less? Gimme a break!

LOL, I would've done it... but not told her...I would've done exactly what you intended to do.

Bake on Monday, and pull out what I need as I needed..lol

and baked the next size down from the "standard" sized cupcake. You want gormet? kids don't care about 'gourmet"...most kids just lick the icing off a cupcake and throw the cupcake in the garbage.lol

I'd give her gourmet by using DH in diff flavors..that's GOURMET enough for her..lol

NEVER ASSUME that when you educate people an doffer them something better , that they will appreciate it or even want better.

I was wondering what she meant by "unique cupcakes". I'm thinking if she wants princess fairies or something on each one she is gonna have to fork out a bunch more....

I know my email irritated her, LOL, but I just couldn't let it pass, letting her think being so cheap was normal! haha.

Not to mention she wanted "references" and "interviews" for this important job... ROFL!

Ok..I NEVER refer to people as "STUPID" but HOW STUPID IS THIS WOMAN? lol

Actually unless you emailed her your name..she doesn't know who you are...you just show up with some yummy DH hines cupcakes..lol

gourmet as a nice BUTTERCREAM swirl and some sprinkles on top and see if she doesn't let you have the gig..lol

You NEVER have to tell her how you bake or what you use!

People like this totally AMAZE ME. Especially BUSINESS people....that's how the "NO CAKE FOR YOU" and HCBIC thing started for me...I had the woman that does PASSION PARTIES and she has a gourmet basket business too...calling me the day of..for cakes!..you know the kind that have to be baked, carved and fondant covered...uhg..lol

Stop aggravating the baby, or the baby will grow up hating cake... icon_lol.gif

LOL! This is hilarious! I am always amazed at the expectations that the general public has on the price of cake and cupcakes!! It's a wonder any of us do this!

I'm DEFINITELY going to keep this at the hobby level.....RisqueBusiness...you are the WOMAN! I don't know how you do it and keep any level of sanity! Well....I know that you're not sane, but that's besides the point icon_wink.gif

You guys are too funny!!!

Yeah unfortunately I have a "cakes by suzy" siggy so she knows exactly who I am...actually I wanted her to see my website so she would know I knew what I was talking about. For some reason I thought she'd see the cakes and think "Cool this is what I want" but I guess instead she wants "cheap". haha. I guess the interviews are making people feel important enough to give her "cheap"....

I wish her the best! I don't have time to bake like that with three boys and one more of somebody on the way....not unless they are paying in gold! icon_biggrin.gif

Funny! Its been like 6-7 years for me to figure out that it isn't worth doing this unless I get reimbursed for my costs AND paid well for my time.... I am considered quite pricey to most people but I have noticed several of you still charge more so I don't feel bad. haha.

Some people just deserve what they get... cheap... For the budget she's proposing, that sounds like Jiffy mix versus DH Gourmet..

Of course, to have a party there she's going to be one of those snooty snots that insists she is the only one worthy of such events icon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif and charge the heck out of it.

It's not exclusive to the cake industry, but others as well, people need to remember that regardless of where they are in the industry, whatever industry that is, they need to charge like professionals that are doing the same level of work. It's hard sometimes to gulp and stand by principles, but you're better to go down on principle and tried, than cheapen yourself and burn out.

My older kid attended a princess tea party last weekend given by one of those so called "professional" party places. 2 ladies came to the person's home, tossed a few tablecloths on the table, provided some hats/cheap feather boas for the kiddos to wear during the party and then served "tea".

Kids got 2 kinds of tiny sandwiches (ham or turkey and cheese) plus the tiniest scone I have ever seen and 3 teeny pieces of fresh fruit. The parents were given a small tray of tiny egg salad and cucumber sandwiches and some fresh grapes. Kids got apple cider and the parents got ice water.

Oook....so the kids basically had a snack (first time I ever saw kids clean plates off completely) and then they brought out the cupcakes. OMG.... they were mini-cupcakes that looked like a 2yr old frosted them and then dumped pink sprinkles. They had funky, lumpy tops and then a thin smear of what looked like canned icing. The one had an almost 1" spiky, lumpy top so they jammed a candle into it and it was for the birthday girl!

$15 PER kid attending for this. The scarier part was all the moms there thought it was SO lovely and inexpensive!!! icon_eek.gif
