Crisco is just a name brand for vegetable shortening. Perhaps you have it there by another brand name?

Also, I should add that if you were to PM MissBaritone, she may be able to better advise you as she is a resident of England as well and is quite clearly WAY smarter than I in the ways of cake decorating.

Which you mind posting the recipe? If it is an icing recipe it is possible that you could use butter for it.

The hardcore people will ONLY ever use Crisco, but truth be told, I've never used Crisco when making frosting from scratch. Cheaper Vegetable Shortening will do just fine, no matter what anyone tells you.

I think I've seen Miss Baritone refer to it as white vegetable fat.

What is considered Hi Ratio shortening? Got a brand name? I have to make some buttercream frosting for a cake that I am making for a Christmas party at work and I am not particularly crazy about the Crisco taste.

This was on sugarcraft. I get my alpine from a local cake store. Just google hi ratio shortening and you will get a ton of sites.

Baking Ingredients Alpine Hi-Ratio Shortening - this shortening was made for ICING! It is so much better than crisco or other shortenings for cooking.
Ingredients: Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (Soybean and Palm oils) with mono-and diglycerides, polysorbate 60. Use only 3/4 to 1 cup per 2 pounds of icing.

I use the Crisco and Powdered Domino and the taste and texture is great together. I have tried the cheaper brands of shortening and sugar and it didn't measure up to the name brand products.

Just my opinion icon_lol.gif

Yeah well, I'm such a rebel, I don't use Domino Powdered Sugar either.

Will the P.S. police come looking for me too? Can I fight Extradition?

Maybe I should but a plane ticket for someplace tropical.

I don't think I've ever SEEN Domino where I live. This is CH country~ and I've heard people bad-mouth it too. Something about the "X" value....times sifted, or something. I'm not that sophisticated in my baking. I do it like gramma did!!!! LOL

Truth be told, I just recently made 2 batches of BC..one for a neighbors cake, one for a cake to go to work with hubby. For the neighbors, I used Crisco, for the squadron, WalMart brand. The of course tasted it, and my husband and friends both agree, the WalMart brand was actually better! It piped a lot better, and it tasted a heck of a lot better.

I AM ANTI-CRISCO AND PROUD OF IT!! icon_smile.gif

Thank you so much to everybody who replied. When I make buttercream I use butter, icing sugar, lemon juice and vanilla flavouring. If you use an electric whisk at high speed it turns the butter white in colour. thumbs_up.gif
