Generally, simple syrup is just equal parts water and sugar, heated till the sugar is disolved. There are variations of this, some include corn syrup as well. Simple syrup can be used to sweeten iced tea, lemonade, and mixed drinks. I think as far as cake decorating is concerned, a thin layer can be brushed on to help maintain the cakes moisture. Also to adhere fondant to a cake without using a buttercream undercoating. I bet you'll hear of other uses too!
