I am wanting to make a cookie bouquet for my daughter's teacher and I have never done one before. I am planning on using the 'no fail sugar cookie' recipe and making them about 1/2 of an inch thick. Does that sound right? And do I put the sticks in before I bake the cookie or right after they come out of the oven? I have read about doing it both ways, but want to know which one works the best. Thanks in advance for the help!!

Either way works great for putting the sticks in.

I just decorated 60 cookies last night and used wooden coffee stirrer sticks for them. I put the sticks in prior to baking the first batch. Spaced it on the second batch, then put them in as soon as they came out of the oven. My finger hit the hot sheet a couple of times. Not fun.

Here's a tip for decorating. For a large variety of colors and minimum mess I use the tubed icing from the market (or Wilton's - but the market brand (deco-mate) tastes better) and just put a dollop of the color I need on a plate, thin it out with water, then paint the cookies with an inexpensive brush. This dries quickly and you get nice vibrant colors without the hard work of mixing all the reds, blacks, blues and greens. For white cookies (such as snowflakes, snowmen, etc.) I use the MMF to cover them, then detail with the icing.

Good luck and have fun making your cookies.

I put my sticks in fresh out of the oven. As I'm putting the stick in, I spin the stick-helps a bunch. I like doing it this way...yes I may have lost some feeling in my finger tips-lol- but I think it's easier. Maybe try both ways to see what you like better.

I would do them a little thinner than a 1/2 in. You don't want the cookies too heavy.
