I have a question for my CC family. How do you use darker colors on a cake without having everyone's teeth, tongue and lips turn the color of the cake? I just add color to the icing, but everyone turns the color of the cake, is there a secret to coloring that I don't know about? I love using dark colors, but I hate having everyone smiling with funky colored teeth. LOL. Any suggestions or tips? Thanks in advance

LOL...I don't know any secrets that could help you out on this one.

With kids it becomes "party entertainment" to see all the colored lips and tongues. This is gross, but true, my son has been tramatized with his pooh after eating too much colored icing. "Mama!!!! My pooh is blue!!!!

Adults, on the other hand, just don't look as cute with "rainbow smiles".

Sorry, I can't help here.

I have no clue how to answer your question since I'm pretty new to baking .... but I do have my two cents to add!!

Mom!!! you are no fun!!!!! lol ... I thought that was the best part of the cake.. the kids love it

Recently a friend of mine who had a halloween b-day party with a black cat as the birthday cake. The birthday girl's tongue was dark blue ..she very proudly showed me her blue tongue and I took a picture .... a few days after the party I took all the pictures to her mom ... she said that Jenna was soooo proud of her picture she insisted that it be placed on the refrigerator. lol

From what I have been told, airbrushing is the best way to get darck rich colors. Not only does it give you the colors you want, but it doesn't effect the taste of the icing that you sometimes get when you have to use a ton of color in the mix.

I haven't tried it yet, I'm hoping Santa will leave one under my tree, but I am really looking forward to it as I too love the bright, dark, rich, colors.

Airbrushing the color onto the cake will help... There will still be a little color on their tongues and lips, but not as bad as having the icing a solid color. I can't think of anyway of preventing this completely.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was thinking there was no way to do it...but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. icon_smile.gif I do get a kick out of the kids with the brightly colored teeth and lips...but the parents just aren't as cute. LOL.
Maybe Santa will leave me an airbrush under the tree with a new Jenn Aire Artizzi mixer. thats all that on my Christmas list, so maybe i'll get lucky. Thanks again everyone.
