Hi, my first post here so please excuse my lack of knowledge in this area.

I was curious if anyone could recommend me a great tasting recipe that I could use instead of Pound Cake to make the wilton 3d choo choo train cake with.

I've made other 3d cakes before and used pound but never been a fan of their taste and the fact that generally I've found I've had to have ice cream to serve with them to be able to eat a piece.

Our family is more of a chocolate cake family especially Devils Food Cake but for this style of cake although I've never tried using it in one before I'm not sure it would hold up.

Any suggestions? Need to have the recipe before the middle of this week as I'm making the cake for my youngest sons birthday. Always loved the 3d cakes for the kids birthdays just not the pound cake.

Thanks,
Lee

I use the cake mix extender recipe on this website in the recipes section. It gives your cake mix more body and it will hold together. Hope this helps and Welcome.

I've never used a pound cake for a 3-d cake. Purse cakes, shoe cakes, any 3-d's i've always used a french vanilla, champagne, chocolate, white almond...anything. There are certain cakes that are lighter and more delicate than others that you might want to put in the fridge before delivering however if you're using a mold you should be fine! icon_biggrin.gif

I made this last night. I made the Birthday Tank cake with it. It is really good and is very durable. I substituted chocolate cake mix and chocolate pudding. It was very good as well.

Thanks for the responses, they're very much appreciated.

If I had more time I would run a trial of a few of the different ideas mentioned there and see which worked the most to my satisfaction. His birthdays on Friday so I know I'll be baking and decorating very soon now.
I will be trying them all in the future though.

In regards to the durable cake recipe that uses the pudding. Did you use just a standard chocolate cake mix or do you think it would work fine with a devils food cake cake mix. I normally make the cake mixes from scratch but I'm 35 weeks pregnant and my almost 1 year old and 4 1/2 year old are running me raggid right now so I have to admit I'm plannning on cheating so I can conserve a little energy icon_redface.gif . Do you think the Devils Food Cake would still work fine if I were to use this method or should I still take the time to mix up a different style of cake mix for it?

Thanks again!
Lee

I've used DH Dark Fudge Chocolate cake mix with melted butter for the oil and instead of water I used milk. It came out really moist and dense. Maybe the Devil's Food would be the same. Sorry I couldn't give you a straight answer.

I always use the Duncan Hines Devils food cake. I did it with the 3D duck that I did. You can mix a box of pound cake mix in with your Devils food mix. you mix them together as you would seperately, then you have a larger amount of batter but your chocolate cake then has a firmer consistency and it is very good. You can also add a box of instant pudding mix into any box mix and it gives it a firmer consistency along with more moistness.
