I feel like everytime I do a cake I end up doing something over again either because I screwed up or because I am such a perfectionist it isnt good enough. Well today I was working on this baby shower cake. I covered it in fondant and I noticed I could kind of see the cake through it. It wasnt too bad, but it bothered me. So I thought I would just peel off the fondant, cover it a little heavier with BC and redo. Well I ended up peeling up half of the top layer of cake. GRRRR! It was a banana cake since the mother to be's favorite cake is banana. But I just dont feel like rebaking. I am just so tired right now! I have a white cake in the freezer that I just made so I think I will just use that, but I feel a little bad. This is a gift and i never really said I was bringing banana cake, but what do you guys think, should i rebake? I have until saturday, but I have 3 kids and hardly anytime to myself! I was so disappointed I had to lay down for a few minutes while my youngest is sleeping and before I have to get back in the car to pick up my middle one from preschool.

Sorry, tough day. Can you carve the remaining cake into a treat for the mom, then go ahead and use the other cake? Re-baking probably isn't necessary.

You need to let go of the 'perfect' result. You will always be able to see minor imperfections that no one else will see. learn from each one, but try not to be so hard on yourself.

Maybe you could use the white cake for the shower, then later on when the baby comes, make a banana cake for mom to have all to herself? Heaven knows she'll need a special treat among theh sleepless nights and dirty diapers!

Well I threw out the banana cake (it was just a 6 incher) because when I get frustrated I start to eat the mistakes thumbsdown.gif ! I decided I just dont have the time to rebake the cake, I am just going to use what I have. I know I need to stop obsessing about perfection. I even knew as I was starting to peel off the fondant that probably only I (and maybe DH) would notice. I need to learn to stop and think everything through before taking action like that again. That is why I laid down after the the "accident" instead of jumping into action again. I knew I needed to think it through this time. Okay so only an hour or two lost. I think now I am just going to clean up the kitchen, spend some time with the kids and get back to it after they go to bed. Thanks, needed to vent!

icon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gif You "THREW" out the banana cake. What happened to cake balls or slapping some BC on for a treat icon_wink.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

yes I threw it out. I know it is wasteful, but I have in the past practically EATEN the whole cake that was a mistake. I threw it out because I was sitting there with a fork in my hand and I knew it had to be done. Not a big fan of the cake balls, making them anyway. Plus I wasnt in a good frame of mind.

congrats on removing temptation, Merissa! I would have probably lied to myself and said "oh the kids will eat it" as an excuse to keep it!

I think most of us want out cakes to be perfect. I know I have thrown away several cakes until I learned to make cake balls.

Maybe throw a little banana extract into the fondant?

So sorry! Take a deep breath and try again!

If only I could take a little nap, I know things would seem better. I decided though I am definitely going to use the cake I already have. I am doing two tiers so I will fill them differently, so there will still be a choice, but they will both be white cake. Hope they like white cake anyway!

oh, Sister, hope tomorrow's a better day! I've got 3 kids myself (13, 2, and 5months)....I UNDERSTAND!!!...My DH gets upset at me for being so self critical...

And, honestly...only decorators and those who browse sites like this would notice anything nit picky...

People have been soooo impressed with my "newbie" work, because they don't see what we do...uneveness, lopsided, goofy BC stars, HA!

Just sing a silly song and dance with your kids, take a breath, and remember...it's cake---cake that's much nicer than what they'd get at the corner groc.

I'm so sorry you had such a rotten day. I feel for you. I'm working on chocolate decorations for a baby shower cake and a life size chocolate skateboard fo my son and I can't tell you how much chocolate I've thrown away today because either my molds failed or I didn't get the right color in it. Tomorrow will be better.

WEll I got one of my cakes successfully covered with fondant (though it was stretching out a little, but I put it behind me and decided NO ONE WOULD NOTICE. But then I tried covering the 6 inch cake again. It was all lumpy. I cant be satisfied so I peeled the fondant off again. More carefully this time. Then I just had to go to bed. I hope today is a better day! I will post a pic when I am done. Hopefully it wont be considered a disaster though!

Okay here is the cake. I had to bail out on some of the decorations because I just couldnt chance having to do anything else over again. Oh well! I think it turned out nicely despite my frustration!

Great job! I think all your cakes are beautiful. You would think you have never had a problem one. I do like hearing about others who run into problems with their cakes. It makes me feel so normal! icon_lol.gif

it is comforting to know that others have problems too isnt it? i agree. as one decorator pointed out to me....''icing is forgiving''...we can always fix it, the problem. learn as we go.
this site has been helping me alot.

I just recently did a Superman cake with the Wilton pan and I hated how his face turned out. It was getting late and I was tired of doing it over and over again. It must have just been me because when the birthday boy's aunt picked up the cakes, she thought that it looked terrific.

Funny story went along with this, the aunt was carrying the cake into the house and she almost dropped it. She ended up smashing Superman's face anyway icon_smile.gif She said the cake still tasted great!
