I'm new at the whole gum paste thing. I have a can of powdered "gum-tex" and I have regular sugarpaste fondant icing. Does anyone know if I can make gumpaste by combining the two, or do I have to make gumpaste from scratch with icing sugar, water...as per the recipe on the side of the can.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I know that there are members out there that add Gum-Tex to fondant all the time, but I do not know what proportions they use.

i add gumtex to fondant ( i have never made a proper gumpaste out of the gum-tex) but i cann't tel you exactly how much i add because i never measure. i usually make a ball of fondant and i dip it in the gum-tex then i knead it in and can feel if i need to add more or not. if it still feels soft i dip it again. that would be most probabry around 1/4th of a teaspoon for a golfball sized ball of fondant.

Gumpaste and fondant are 2 different things. You can add gum-tex to both. Gumpaste can usually be rolled much thinner and hardens much faster from what I've read. (Personally, I haven't noticed much difference, but don't have years of experience, either).

You can make really delicate flowers, etc with gumpaste or fondant, but you can't change fondant to gumpaste just by adding gum-tex.

Sorry to be the bearer of that news. icon_sad.gif

You only need about 1/4 tsp GT for a whole batch of fondant gives it a little elasticity. I don't use gum tex for gumpaste
i use tylose 1#fondant 1 1/2 tsp tylose 2 tsp if homemade fondant and 1/2 tsp crisco. icon_smile.gif

So sorry if this has been asked before, but can someone tell me what is the benefit of the Gum Tex? Is the 50/50 Fondant/Gumpaste the best mix for a beginner? If not what would be?
Thanks for the info.

from my experience working with fondant and gum-tex together, it makes the fondant dry much faster and it holds the shape better too
i don't think anybody mentioned that adding gumtex to fondant turns fondant to a gumpaste icon_eek.gif it does make fondant easier to work with and reduces the drying time. you also can roll fondant out very very thin.

spoiled1, IMO 50 50 is even too much 30 to 60 is great and so is just added gumtex. try it and you will see what works the best for you.

PS. please don't take this comment the wrong way. I just wanted to clarify why I stated that you can't make the one out of the two.
