My daughter needs glasses, and we are picking them up next week. She is worried about the kids giving her a hard time since she will be the only one with them in her class. So, I figured I would make a treat with some kind of glasses theme, put on my glasses, go to class with her, hand out treats, fuss over her glasses, and dare someone to make a crack.... I am not usually so over-involved, but she does seem pretty worried. I really didn't want a cake, but something more individual. Cupcakes would work, but what to put on them. I can't find a glasses choc. mold. OK, guys what do you say????

Maybe something Harry Potter style? Harry Potter is huge right now and he wears glasses.

Or buy a cool t-shirt and get some fabric paint to write something like "Smart chicks wear glasses" or "Cool glasses". My step-daughter (she's 10 yrs old) got glasses this past summer and she loves wearing them. I think they make her feel special.

Hi Bulldog,

2 out of 4 of my kiddos wore glasses and no one has ever said anything to them at all about them ever. My oldest is almost 12 and she is in contacts now and my 7 year old's vision was pretty bad and the doctor suggested we try him in cantacts to see if it improved. It improved ten fold, but he wears his glasses occasionally when he tears a contact.

I bet most kids won't even say anything, but they will love to get some treats!!

Berta

After the initial surprise, "hey, what's with the glasses?", I don't think the kids will care. Making a big deal about it may draw more attention to the new glasses. How about just sending in holiday cookies or cupcakes and not focusing on the glasses? (no pun intended!)

I agree that the kids will probably not say much about it beyond noticing that she has them. My 2yo son wears glasses, and the kids in hos library play group have never said a word.

That aside, what about a Mr. Potato head theme? Some could have glasses, some without... maybe let the kids use pretzels broken into the shape of glasses on the faces? Just an idea. Good luck to your daughter! icon_smile.gif

Ok, i don't know about where you live, but here kids are mean!! I think it depends how old your child is...mine got glasses at 2 and no one has teased her, but I think the older they are the less accepting kids are. If she is older the kids may tease her for you making a big deal about it anyways...its a tough call..my sister got glasses in grade 5 and kids broke them all the time just to be mean!! however I have heard in younger classes of the teacher making craft time to make glasses out of pipe cleaners and the kids thought they were the coolest things!! Another child in my DS class had to wear the eye patch, and each kid had to wear one for the day too!! He became very popular!!

Good luck with whatever you decide!!

Thanks for help everybody. The point is not if the kids are actually going to say something mean or even notice the glasses; the point is my daughter is very worried and this will help her feel better. I know everything will go fine, but if I can help her feel just a bit more confident that's my job thumbs_up.gif

How about some sorta cookie? Shapped like glasses. What grade is she in? My daughter has glasses to read or be on the computer. She is now in 3rd grade but got them in first grade. Honestly, they thought she was cool and wished they had to wear some. I know everyone is different and if it'll make her feel better, do it.

Thanks for the nice words Vitade. I think I am getting a good glasses cookie idea, but we'll see if it actually works.

I love the idea of the pipe cleaner glasses. Maybe see how it all goes and if she does get teased, then you could talk to the teacher about the students possibly doing the pipe cleaner glasses as a fun project on a rainy or snowy day? I always wanted glasses and braces when I was younger. I used to take the lenses out of plastic sunglasses and just wear the frames and I would fold one of those plastic bracelets that you got out of a gumball machine (it was the 80's what can I say?) and put it in my mouth for braces.

I was the same way..i wanted glasses...they were cool and they make u look smart...

i totally agree, i don't think they will say anything to her..but if u bring in treats the first day she wears her glasses, they'll be so distracted by the sugar they wont even notice...

My son got glasses last year in 3rd grade, he was so upset about getting them he did not give me the note that he failed the eye test at school I did not know until a couple of weeks went by and the school nurse called wanting to know why she had not heard from me it was a total shock! Luckily his best friend wears glasses so I took took him to his eye Dr. which made him more willing to go, now they are "glasses buddies" my son is near sighted and he will have to wear them all the time now so I made sure he picked out a pair he liked. When he went to school and came home he said all the kids told him how much they liked them and the girls thought he looked cute in them! But of course there is always one jerk who will call you a four eyed freak, which my son's reponse was "well at least I can see!" Now he has a couple of kids in his class with glasses now so it is no big deal.

She will be fine!!!!!!!! icon_biggrin.gif She will probably start a new trend every one will want them and Walmart has some really cute little girls glasses the Mary Kate and Ashley ones are adorable!

Thanks everybody. I made cupcakes and piped a face on each with glasses. I probably could have done better, but was in a hurry. The kids liked them, but most importantly my daughter did, and felt better icon_smile.gif

I'm so glad to hear it worked out. How was it? What was the kids reaction? Hopefully it was one that made your daughter feel good.

Hi Vitade- To tell you the truth they took one look at the classes said things like "cool" and "neat" and wanted to know when they could eat the cupcakes. Gotta love kids! sometimes, anyway.
