Dang, one 12 x 18 is sufficient for feeding 60 people!

For a school, I would probably quote $60 to $75 delivered for one 12 x 18.

I charge about $75 for that size cake, depending on the decorations. I would suggest you check in your area and see what the bakeries, not grocery stores, are charging and come up with something comparable.

I would also check the amount it will feed, my info says that size only feeds 48 but that came from a local baker here...standards are different in other places.

I think I would call back and clarify the sizes and how many people each size will feed. They might have been thinking two 1/4 sheet cakes. And if I gave them a break in price, it wouldn't be huge, they know that you do this for a living and you can't be giving your cakes away. I think they probably EXPECT to be charged your normal fees.

As for ideas, you could write spelling bee words all over the cakes - some spelled correctly, some maybe not. Maybe lay a fondant (or smoothed buttercream) blue ribbon for 1st place across the cake.

Thanks everyone !!

I am going over to the school for a meeting, and I am going to make sure I talk to the staff member who called me about the cake and make sure what size they really need .........

I am really nerves about quoting to high because I would like to receive more orders in the future ..
But I know not to sell myself short !

Never sell yourself short...do it once and everyone then expects a certain price...

What about 3d bees (from fondant or gumpaste) all over the cakes...maybe even put a few "flying" using wire? Or you could order some bumble bee cupcake pics or sugar bees from a cake supply store (www.sugarcraft.com has them). Or maybe even a bee hive here or there.

You could write on each cake: BEE Proud, P-R-O-U-D, Proud! and then on the other: A+ spellers! Way to go! or even something like: Have you heard the BUZZ?...We're A+ Spellers!

Just some goofy thoughts! Cannot wait to see your cakes!

That is a 1/2 sheet cake. Wilton says a two layer feeds 72. I tell my customers that a single layer feeds 50. I charge $50 for a 1/2 sheet cake. $80-100 for a full depending on decorations. If your doing two of those they are trying to feed more that 60.

I usually charge 50.00 for a normally decorated 12x18 sheet. For more elaborate decorations...I would charge 65.00-75.00. I think you are being more than fair by charging 50.00. Also...I am sure they will pay you out of some kind of school expense account.

As for your decoration...I see spelling words and maybe a bumble bee on there. I would somehow tie in the school name and colors. Good luck!
