I was just making a practice cake for the guys in my husbands shop, and was going to make it red white and blue. Out of all the cakes I've made, I've never had to use red for anything. Most are very pastel-ish. Well, I went to mix "Christmas Red" the night before and let it deepen for 24 hours. It NEVER turned red. It stayed like WOW hot pink. I mean, it hurt my eyes LOL. So, we just kinda ate the cake at home, I iced it with that anyway, so I went to make a baby shower cake this morning, and used to Christmas Red to acheive the light pink, and it worked fine.

My question is, what color should I be using for red red? I'm making the cake for his Squadron party this Friday and I need red..not hot pink..but I don't wanna use a whole bottle of anything! I've heard the Americolor is better?

What can I do y'all?

Thanks in Advance

To get the red on my clown cake I made pink, then added red to the pink.

That is the only red red I have ever made.

Hope that helps!

Americolors Super Red is the best I've tried. If you can't find that in time, try Wilton's Red Red. It is best to let it sit 24 hours or so like you did. Keep adding red coloring until it's red after that. Wilton's No Taste Red is a joke for a large amount of icing that you want red, not pink! Yeah, it may not have an after taste, but you'll need 3 or 4 jars of it!

i used to work for a print company and have found that if you get a sample of the shade you want to acheive and hold it next to your icing you can see the colors it is lacking to achieve a particular shade by sample i mean a picture or some other printed form...then add a small amount of the color it is lacking sometimes my reds need a little blue or even black...but tiny amounts...too much can give unwanted colors....

I too love the Americolor Super Red. It's in a dropper bottle, no toothpicks, so it's easier to use. So far, knock on wood, I have always gotten a great color from these. I use it mostly for dark colors like red, black, brown, any color that needs to be brilliant. I used it to make a 50th birthday cake, lots of black and there was no after taste from it at all. Good luck!

Great! So I think I'll go with Americolor. Where can I get it? I'm in California.

I buy the Americolor from a local cake supply store. I did find it on the internet for you, but I don't know if you'll be able to get it in time for what you need it for now. But for future needs I defintely recommend this.

Personally I'm with everyone else what said Americolor Super Red. That stuff is AWESOME!! I would order from www.sugarcraft.com. Their prices are very reasonable & they are super fast shippers. I placed an order on Thursday and received it on Tuesday. Good luck thumbs_up.gif

I've used Wilton No-Taste Red for big amounts. I've never had a problem with it.
