I have noticed that a lot of you use fondant that is striped - like for making flags and such. How do you do this? I want to do a whimsical cake for christmas and was hoping to do one layer like a candycane - red and white striped but need some instuction - is it painted on? layered? any help would be great! and what do you paint the fondant with?

Thanks!!
Sarah

You can use either technique ... you can paint stripes on with your gel or paste food colouring, or mix a powder colour with some lemon extract or vodka.

Otherwise you can colour pieces of fondant, roll and cut them out (a bit thicker than usual) then overlap them a bit and roll them together ... I'm sure someone can give you more specific instructions for this technique...

If you're just looking for red & white, I would roll out the white as a sheet of fondant, then put strips of red on top and roll it out. As long as you keep the pieces covered while you are working on the other colour, they should stick fine, but you might want to very lightly brush a LITTLE bit of water or egg white on the back of the red before you apply it to the white to help it stick.
