I have an order for a Batman cake, and they said they just wanted the batman symbol (not batman himself) I was going to do an oval cake, with the yellow background and the black wings.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to make the wings look really smooth? (since there are so many sharp corners i am not sure how buttercream is going to work) Do you think Colorflow would be a bit too much for this? or should I try doing it with Buttercream? Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I think that buttercream would be okay for this. I would just trace the emblem onto the cake and then use tip # 16 (star) to fill in. I think that it will look great. Be sure to post your pic!

What about using fondant? You can let it dry a bit so it won't be so flimsy.

that is a beautiful cake!

I was wondering the same thing..can I let black fondant kind of dry out and then cut out the shape, and put like white stars around it?

I don't see why not. I haven't worked with fondant very often though. Hopefully someone else will be able to give you a better answer.

The FBCT would be great for this. I did one last night and I love it. The process is simple. Just like doing a piping gel transfer but outline in black and fill in with colors. Freeze for 2 hours and turn over onto cake. This has really helped me achieve some things without the edible image machine that I am hoping for from santa.

I did a cake similar with the batman symbol. I did a gel transfer since the design is not that difficult. I used tip 16 stars to fill it in. Good luck! icon_smile.gif

If it were me, I would most likely do that with fondant.

One thing you could try although I've never used it on a space that large is to use the black icing in the tubes. First you outline the image (double it if you're worried about it being weak in spots) and then you warm the icing in the tube in the microwave until it flows like honey. You don't want it hot and you'll leave the cap off when you heat it but replace it when it's done so you can knead the tube. After you knead it, it should flow right out of the tube filling in the outline. It'll be very warm and smooth but set back up as it cools. You may need 2 tubes and you'd need to do them at the same time to get a uniform finish.

I've done it in fondant. Just made a template and cut the fondant out. It looked great!
