I want to make a bow and was wondering which would be better to work with. I've worked with fondant before, but my family really doesn't like it, even the marshmallow one. I've got so many bags of the Wilton's candy melts and thought I'll try to make the bow from the candy clay. It might taste better than the fondant. What are your thoughts on this? Have you done either one and which do you preffer? Can I use the clay instead of fondant to cover the whole cake? Thanks.

The clay works great for the bows. I think some people do cover their cakes with it and many add a mixture of candy clay and fondant. I think you need to experiment with this to see if you get your desired effect and taste, for some this is too rich.

Are you suppose to eat the bow? icon_smile.gif My family doesn't like fondant either. Well everyone except my SIL, who loves it. I still make my bows out of fondant. Most people will find the bow to pretty to eat. And if you plan ahead it can actually be saved.

I have heard of mixing candy clay with fondant and using it that away to cover a cake. Haven't tried it, though.

Usually the bow isn't eaten, but you know, someone will likely want to, better safe than sorry!
Haha, I think we should just make one, get it back and keep re-using personally, haha!

The first time I made a bow I used it for my Parent's Anniversary cake (Oct 6) then put it in a cake box. When my Grandma's Birthday (Oct 20) came around I reused it. Grandma kept it, for a good year or two, before my cousins kids got ahold of it. icon_biggrin.gif

The bow cake I did recently, they told me in advance they wanted to save the bow. So I did it on a cirlcle of fondant (that I had let dry). They could remove it easily and save.

Someone please make this understandable for me. Once the bow is made out of candy clay, we can eat it, right? Will it become hard like a fondant?
I want to make a present cake where the bow goes around all 4 sides of cake, and stands on top. Can we cut thru it? Thanks.

yes you can eat the candy clay bow.. it will set kinda like a tootsie roll

I like working with candy clay it makes great roses and you can make large ones with it... I would NOT use candy clay for the bow in summer or if you live somewhere warm it will not work well but for those of use having winter /fall it works great.

I have mixed candyclay and fondant for swags and they work great it actually makes the nasty wilton fondant taste good. I knead together 1/2 fondant and 1/2 candy clay

I love working with candy clay. It is so easy to mold with and everything is edible. I have made white chocolate with pepermint flavor and milk chocolate with cherry flavor. It just does not hold up well in heat. I made one cake with little tools and such on it and everything held up except the lawnmower I made the handle kept falling over because of the heat. Still tasted good.

Thank you all for your help. I can't wait to play with the candy clay. Whenever I work with fondant I feel like I'm with my 2 yr old playing with playdoh.
