Here goes!!!

I'm going to be making a cake for a "Mr. GQ Contest" that our high school has in February. I'm the coordinator for it and thought this would be a great way to get my name out there. The theme is the 50s. We are really excited about this theme as it hasn't been done before. Here's my idea for the cake:

3 square tiers - the bottom 2 stacked and the top one on pillars. White buttercream (I haven't ventured into the MMF yet) with black, pink and silver accents. I have found molds for chocolates in the shapes of 50s cars, records, musical notes, guitars, hamburgers, french fries and coke bottles and I thought I would put these around the sides of the bottom two tiers. On the top tier side I'm going to have "Mr. GQ 2006", again using molded chocolate letters. Between the top tier and the second tier (between the pillars) I'm going to put some matchbox fifty style cars. The topping will be a chocolate record on a base with pink, black and silver sparkly ribbon flaring out around it. I haven't decided on the flavor of the cake and if I'm going to have filling in it.

So any opinions? Any other ideas?

I'm just outside Houston. Kind of between Conroe and Houston. It's a very small town. The closer store is over 10 miles away.

I saw that picture. I also have the mold for a jukebox. Forgot to mention that one. I just haven't gotten into MMF yet and I think that was what was used on the other cake. I haven't had the time. I work full time as well as run my own catering business. I didn't think the Mr. GQ thing was going to be that big of a deal but it seems to have taken over my life. It's the biggest fund raiser that our school has for Project Prom. They raised over $12,000.00 with the Mr. GQ last year. One thing coming out of it is that my name is starting to get out there as a cake decorator and a caterer.

Oh my gosh....that's a heck of a lot of cake!!!! I'm the one who did the 50's cake....here it is....and if you need any directions just ask...

The checkerboard is just fondant squares (how easy is that?) that I placed on a ganache covered cake....

It's soooo easy to do and adds a great 50's flair...

Have fun!!!

We originally were going to have a dinner with car hops and everything. The person in charge of refreshments is not returning my calls or e-mails so it has fallen to me to plan the refreshments. I thought this would be the easy way of handling it -- I wouldn't have to ask for any volunteers and I wouldn't have to ask for any donations. Of course, it puts an extra burden on me, but then again like I said - my name will be out there.
