Bought this set of pans today that will make a checkerboard loaf cake. The directions say that if you're using cake mix, to cut the liquid called for in half. Anyone ever do this? I'm always adding stuff to cake mix, not leaving it out so I thought I'd better ask before I try it.

I've seen the checkerboard set for a 9" round cake, but not a loaf cake. Where did you find that? I haven't tried one, but they sure look cool!

I got it at a thrift store. It's called a Rowoco Checkered Loaf 4 piece set. It's neat and works the same way as the round ones except with 3 loaf pans and a straight divider (3 stripe). You can make striped cakes or checkered ones. The box looks kind of old so I'm not sure when it came out.

I don't have the round checkerboard set. I usually do the cheaters checkerboard cake lol (or at least that's what I call it). This is where you bake the cakes normal and then cut out and switch the sections. Not sure if those sets call for a special recipe like this one does.

Well, a lot of specialty pans and loaf pans call for a more dense cake like a pound cake. Some pans use thicker batters so that the batter doesn't run into other sections or leak and such. I think that this is likely the reason, sometimes it is also a support reason. I would just follow what they say, perhaps even decreasing the oil. I wouldn't worry, they have a good reason for telling you this, give it a try.

I found my round checker board pan at a thrift store also I paid a whole $2.40 for it. I love thrift stores my DH HATES them for selling to me. He says he is going to put a picture of me at all the stores and offer to pay them double if they don't sell to me. I sneak away all the time and have to hide my stuff before he comes home then when I use the stuff I buy he says where did that come from? I give the look and the smile he already knows and just shakes his head.

Lisa I don't know if you still need it, but here is the recipe that came on the back of the round checkerboard cake set I bought the other day at a thrift shop. There is no mention of using a boxed cake mix and I have not made one yet so I don't know how this one tastes.
But here is the recipe:
3 cups all purpose flour
2 1/2 Tsps. baking powder
1 Tsp. salt
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 Tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup milk
2 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate

Melt chocolate over low heat and set aside
Mix flour, baking powder, and salt..set aside
In large mixer bowl on medium speed, cream butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light and fluffy...about 5 minutes.
At low speed beat in flour mixture alternating with milk. Beat only until smooth.
Divide batter in half
To one half add the melted chocolate and beat thoroughly.

Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes
Cool in pans for 15 minutes

I hope this helps.

Lisa.....here is the cake update!
The cake batter was extremely thick......but after baking it had a decent rise to it and it was moist.....but.........it tasted just blah...even the chocolate part was blah.
So if I used this recipe again...it would have to be spruced up flavorwise.
Just thought I would let you know.
