My youngest daughter and I decided to tackle making my oldest daughters wedding cake!!!! Since both of us have so many other duties in the days before the wedding we wanted to make a dummy cake we could do ahead. We are planning on a four layer square shaped fondant covered cake with gumpaste roses. We are planning on seperating the layers but only want a short 2 inch seperation between cake layers. We do want one real layer of cake for cutting. I have not been able to find any clear instructions on making a dummy cake. Any adive , links or supply links or instructions would be appreciated. One of my main questions is does it matter if you make the top or bottom layer the real cake? I would prefer it to be the 6 inch top layer if thats safe. Also how far ahead can we make the fondant cover dummy cake? Thank you!!!

I have done dummy cakes on the bottom and real cake for the top 2 layers without a problem. You can purchase dummy cakes at almost any cake supply store or if you're interested in on line.....Sugarcraft, Beryls, Country Kitchen, etc. I have also seen them made from upholstery foam, cut with an electric knife. Some people buy regular styrofoam and glue them together to form their cake. The fondant can be applied to the dummy as far ahead as you want...just keep it dust/moisture free.

Good luck and let us see your creation when you're done!!

How do you clean a dummy cake after use with buttercream and can you just put fondant over dummy or do you need bc frosting? This is my first time experienting with them?
