I have to make a cinderella cake with the wonder mold pan and a Bert and Ernie character pan for my 2 year old niece. I am going to put an 8 in cake under the wonder mold. Here is my question: Would you put filling in the 8 in cake? How about the bert and ernie pan? I have made a few character cakes and never knew how good filling was in a cake until I started reading this site. So I thought I would ask all the experts what there thoughts would be on this.

TIA
Kim

I'm not an expert baker, but I am an expert eater and I say bring on the filling - the more the better!

I like filling! icon_smile.gif

I think you will have to dowel that 8" to support the doll cake on top though.

I've not worked with character pans much, so I don't know how filling them works out.

I love fillings in cakes, but many children do not. (Mine included). I'd probably go with a plain cake.

All the kids cakes I do(for kids only parties) , Do not have fillings, most children do not like the taste of any filling and only ask for "MORE FROSTING". If there is a adult/kid party and more than 1 cake I would fill for the adults with flavor and frosting for kids. I also have never filled a character pan, so I can not help you there.

I agree that most children do not like filling. Maybe you could do one of the cakes with filling for the adults.

I would go with what the parents (or whoever is ordering cake) would like....generally they (parents) will only order something their kids would love anyway. "kid friendly" fillings include (from my experience) vanilla pastry cream (like a vanilla custard or pudding) & fresh diced strawberries (or omit fruit), chocolate mousse or choc. pastry cream have been big hits too. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY.......how to YOU feel about the additional investment of TIME and MONEY it takes to do it?? Will you be compensated for your time and expense?? If not, is that ok with you? It really comes down to what you feel good about doing.....It will be a FANTASTIC cake I'm sure ...filled or not. icon_wink.gificon_wink.gif A side note: fillings make a cake extra moist and yummy too...but the cake will need to be refridgerated as well...and that takes up LOTS of fridge space! hope we helped..good luck! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Well first there will be more adults than kids. The cake is for my niece so I don't really mind the extra cost. I think what I will do is make the eight inch a chocolate cake and put in cookies and cream filling and just leave the rest plain. Thanks for all your help.
