I worked most of the week on making gumpaste baby booties and small flowers, etc. for a baby shower cake. Was very excited about doing this cake as I have been so inspired by all of you. Thanks so much for all the photos. Anyway, this cake was for a very special friend's daughter. I wanted it to be perfect. The mom-to-be requested a yellow cake with buttercream frosting with coconut. I do not like coconut, but it became my "lifesaver".
I had a heavy duty box which folded up with handles. Have used it a number of times and loved carrying cakes in it. I had my car loaded with gifts, purse, etc. and had it running to warm up (I live in NY). Grabbed the cake by the box handle and kissed hubby. He said something about carrying the cake from the bottom of the box and I went to respond when all of a sudden the handle broke! DH walked away and all I could keep saying was "Oh my God!" "Oh my God!" DD came running in with her boyfriend. She knew it was my cake by my reaction! The top that I so painstakingly made went flying (could hear it break on the tile floor) and the cake landed upside down on the side of the box!
After I recovered enough to shut my mouth I picked the cake up with one had on the plate and put my other hand underneath the cake and flipped it right side up. I just stood there for a while and thought. I HAD to take a cake to the party. So I grabbed some leftover frosting and coconut and began working on the cake. The coconut hid a lot of problems! The cake was no longer completely level and it was still a little lopsided. The baby booties did not break, but the shoe laces did. The plaque broke just a little as I had waxpaper on the bottom ot it which I think held it together. I was able to hide some of the breaks with the flowers and leaves.
I have not posted any pictures previously. Just have not gotten around to it. Now I'll have too! Here's a picture of the top of the cake. Just goes to show how really creative a cake decorator can be!
WOW! Looks like a pretty good "save". I probably would have passed out right on top of the cake.
This is the cake after the fall? You did awesome! I can't imagine what I would do, probably fall to my knees and cry!
OMG- that looks so perfect and pretty. You cannot even tell from the pics that you had an accident. As a side note don't you hate it when DH's jinx you.
I've said it before and I'll say it again....It's not what you can do in a perfect situation...it's what you can make of a disaster! Good save!
Great save! Had you not said anything I never would've known all that you and the cake went through!!!
You are not only talented and have a lot of artistic creativity, but you also have a lot of talent and creativity in saving a catastrophe! Great job! I probably woulnd't have noticed unless you pointed out the small things!
You did an excellent fix on this...........BTW, did you tell them later on that it fell?
I can't believe it fell. My cakes don't even look that before they would have fallen. And I have really bad luck so if my cake would fall out of a box it would land upside down, smashed with cake and frosting all over the floor or carpet. Worse yet it would probably wait to fall until I was outside and someone I know was driving by. . I have to say your cake is beautiful.
Wow! It's beautiful! I can't believe what a great save that was! It sounded hopeless when you first described it. Phew! Great Job. It looks like a million bucks!
I had a disaster myself this weekend so I know how you feel. Can't say I recovered as well as you did. Hats off to ya for a great recovery.
Thank God the box protected it enough for you to recover the cake to a good as new condition! Love the booties! Very nice!
What a beautiful job! I would have been BAWLING so much I don't think I could have done such a nice and quick repair!
WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! Your cake looks amazing. I love the booties and bears. I give you alot of credit for working so well under the pressure! You truely do have a talent. Congrats!
THAT cake fell? I read your post, saw your picture, then scrolled down further to see the cake that fell!! I thought you were doing a before/after kinda thing! WOW! "Great save" is an understatement.
Amazing,
