I am curious to hear y'all's opinions on this subject. I have decorated with fondant once ( I know...I'm still a newbie icon_rolleyes.gif ) and I used the recipe from Toba Garrett's book. Which do you use? Store bought or homemade? Thanks! icon_lol.gif

I used the store bought for my daughter's party .. I did some suggar cookies ... they were spectacular but the fondant was horrible .... I made some MMF recently and that was much better .. I didn't cover a cake .. I just wanted to see how it came out ... I would much rather do that next time

I use the MMF recipe on here somewhere! I finally talked to a lady I did the puppy paw cake for and asked her about the taste and if the kids liked it or not. She said she the kids loved it of course and she even found herself picking little pieces off and eating it by itself. I've used the packaged fondant once or twice and it tastes nasty. I would only use it if I was in a hurry to make a bow or something but never to cover the cake (never again!).

i would like to try Satin Ice... i use MMF.. i like the flavor... i keep a box of Wilton around for small projects, so i dont have to make a big batch of MMF up.. ... but i would never cover a cake with it...the store brand even has an oder to it..

The only pre-made fondant I have access to locally is the Wilton fondant, and I just don't care for the taste.

Just last night I tried the MMF for the first time and it was a BIG hit! I made a cake with MMF snowflakes (picture in my photos) so there were lots of little scraps leftover of the MMF. My kids were sneaking them and loved them!

I make large batches of MMF that is on this website. I have a foodsaver so I vacuum pack mine and it will last for up to a year...although the longest I have had a batch around was a month.

I vote for MMF...but I have never tried Satin Ice....

But I have only used it for decorations, I am not brave enough to try and cover a cake with it yet. icon_redface.gif

I have to vote for MMF at this time. I have used both Wilton and MMF. I definetly prefer MMF to Wilton. However, I am going to try Satin Ice in the near future since the chocolate was recommended in another forum.

I love the Satin Ice for pre-made, but I hate to spend the money on it. I use Collette Peters' recipe, which I understand is very similar to Toba's, and love it. It's not quite as sweet as the MMF and I find it easier to work with, especially modeling. Plus it's cheap, though not quite as cheap as the MMF.

I have also used both the Wilton and the MMF and like everyone else I agree the MMF is MUCH better. The wilton one taste 'yucky' as my nephew says.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I made a small batch of MMF once just to taste.....I thought it was VERY sweet. It probably tastes good with cake, though. I may just have to break down and cover a cake with it. It's such a shame that our hobby is sooooo messy. Every time I go to make a cake I DREAD the mess I will have to clean up later. icon_rolleyes.gif Maybe I am just lazy...... icon_redface.gif hehe Thanks again guys! icon_lol.gif
