Hi,
I just finished class 3 of the fondant and gumpaste course and wanted to share how my flowers turned out. I am especially fond of the carnations!! I am officially hooked on gumpaste now and need to scour the world for great tutorials and instructions for more flowers!! I found Scott Wooly's site but frankly they are out of my price range! If I ever come into a fortune though ... Dreams are good.

I love your red fantasy flower - the color just pops! Try getting the Wilton gumpaste flower kit as the book shows alot more flowers and the instructions are pretty easy to follow. I have been using that to teach myself what is not taught in class. I love all flowers and would someday hope to be good enough to be able to recreate any flower in gumpaste.

VERY NICE JOB!!!!

Now I guess I'll have to take the class. I'm a carnation lover and those look so real I would want to smell them.

Keep up the great work.

Thank you for the kind comments.

MomLittr: I actualluy have that kit and have been meaning to try it. I am actually planning on doing the rose this week as I have a cake for Mid March that needs yellow roses!! Anyone have an idea where I can get instructions for irises. That is the other flower they want on the cake??

I really enjoyed this class and my instructor (also a friend of mine) commented to the class how quiet I was being so I must be liking it! LOL! I never thought I was that loud to begin with!

Good luck with the roses this week. I have the rosebuds I made this past weekend in my pictures. You know, I was hoping a few more flowers would have been taught in the class, but after going thru the flower kit book, they are just as easy to learn on your own.

I was originally hoping for more flowers in the course as well but I am glad to have taken it and learned a couple of tricks. I have had the Flowers kit for months now and being a gumpaste virgin was too scared to try it! Now I was liooking through the book yesterday and none of it seems difficult at all any more!!

My Wilton instructor told us that you can make any flower you want in gumpaste, just buy a fake one that you like at the craft store and take it apart to see the pieces and shapes that make it up!

I admit it. I am carnation challenged so maybe you can help me out. In Lesson 2 you make the carnation base out of fondant then in Lesson 3 you make the petals in gumpaste. Why? In regards to technique, I have been using "the veining tool like a pencil, press the heel down....overlapping the impressions to create the torn, ruffled look desired". No matter what I do I don't get a "ruffle". Placing the final petal as described in the book works, but the other petals just aren't right - they're flat. Any suggestions?

I have class 3 tonight and can't wait to learn how to finish the carnations. I made 100 bases last week for a wedding cake that I am doing for the MD cake show March 10th. I plan on spending this week finishing them.

(note to self: the cake covered with carnations is Chelles. Second note to self, make flowers OTHER than carnations for my MACS cake.) icon_smile.gif

jmt1714 - you'll have to let me know which cake is going to be yours so I can see it! The carnations are actually between two tiers - I have a sketch that I'll send you if you want to see.

except sometimes the fake flowers aren't exactly true to form. When you can, buy real flower!

Wow nice work! I love the attention to detail you have and the nice color accents you used. Now can you make a 1000 of those and sell it to me whole sale is the next question? lol icon_smile.gif

My plan was to use both. I use the silk for basic petal shape references and I also consult photos and textbooks on flower form and composition. I totally agree with you about the differences as I am a horticulturalist and had trouble finding a silk flower that was close enough for my liking!!

LOL!! I wonder what exactly is wholesale pricing on gumpaste hat1.gif ?! I would as I thought they were fun to make! I fear they would not make the trip very well. I always wonder how someone would pack something that fragile to ensure they didn't break during transport.

Thank you everyone!! I never imagined my flowers would get so many kind words being my first ones ever. I love this gumpaste stuff and now I am working on one that I have no cutters for but need to make to be ready within 2 weeks. I don't have time to order cutters and wait so we will see what happens!! You are all so wonderful with your kind words and encouragement!!

It is great isn't it!! I am working on an iris right now but as I have no cutters my first try didn't turn out. I drew a new plan and I'll see how it goes!
