Hi.....last night, I posted a display cake that I did for a craft show I am going to be in this weekend.

I don't need to be lavished with compliments on my cakes, but I am a little worried, because it got some hits, but not much feedback. Since it is going into a craft show Saturday, I'd like to know if there is something wrong with it or not quite up to standard.

I am trying to promote my very brand new business, and if a display cake is not up to par, I would really hope that people would be honest with me about it.

The camera angle may make it look a little tilted, but it is quite even in real time. That is the big thing that may be a turn off. I really wanted this cake to be impressive and sort of give off an elegant,, fresh romantic vibe, but now I am worried that it doesn't work.

Ok, am I paranoid?? You betcha....but that is why I come to this site...for your help!! icon_smile.gif I'm not fishing for compliments, honestly, but if you guys think it's a great cake, I know it is safe to put on display for potential clients. If you don't, I will rethink what I am setting out on my table.

Anyway, here are some closeups so you don't have to sift through my photos.

Thanks...you guys are the best! icon_cry.gif

no...it's a styrofoam (I know, so appetizing!!) I thought it'd be good to hang onto whatever I make now for the bridal show I'm doing in January. Hopefully, the cake will stay nice.

ellepal,

Your cake is gorgeous, very elegant. I think it will be a big hit. I love the roses, how did you make them?

Hi! I thought the cake was great when I first saw it. Sorry, I guess I should have "said" something. I like it a lot, you did a great job! What is the stand in the middle? That's my favorite thing about this cake (and the lace), I always like to see unusual supports for cakes. I would like to purchase some myself. All the best for Saturday!! I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead! thumbs_up.gif

Cindy...well, the roses, that is my new little happy find. I purchased the gumpaste accents on line. I have made gumpaste roses, etc, in the past, (I did a bouquet on the engagement cake), but I don't have the 20 extra hours per week to GET'ER done. icon_smile.gif So I found this marvelous website (Pfeil and holding) that sells gumpaste everything for a somewhat reasonable price. It is not super cheap, but it is such a time saver, and their products are superior.
If I quit my full time teaching job, I probably would love to do more gumpaste......but for now, it's my little secret!! SHHHHHH!! icon_wink.gif

Lenette....thank-you. The cake separator is a crystal clunky candle holder that I bought at TJ Maxx. It was on sale for 7 bucks, and it had a very wide, flat surface, just right for a small cake.
When I go onto British websites, they seem to use candle holders alot as tier separators....that is where I got the idea.

I feel better now...thanks. Yes, I know it's silly, but my insecurities were rising, and your opinions so much matter in this cake. I am trying to make a bonified, successful business from my cakes, and I need to be at the top of my game all the time. Public opinion is crucial icon_smile.gif

The cake is beautiful...I love the lace on the sides also. Sometimes I don't comment on a cake because I read others comments and I can't think of anything that's hasn't been said already except DITTO ... so DITTO! icon_biggrin.gif

Your work is beautiful as always. I'm not sure about the candle holder. I'm an Indiana girl and we are soooo conservative. I'd just be sure to have pics of your work in white and without the special tiering. Boring folks need cake too. icon_smile.gif

Best of luck at the craft show. Your portfolio is awesome!

I'll never tell about the roses.

But one more comment. How can you have the slightest doubt about your talent??!!! Your cakes are all beautiful. Those storybook cakes are out of this world!!!! You are going to do great, don't doubt your abilities for a second.

This is fabulous... and even though you didnt hand make the roses you have a fabulous eye...anyone can purchase all the fixin's to decorate a cake and they still come out well.. less than pleasing.. i've seen this.. it takes an artist to put it all together whether you made them yourself or not.. and darlin' youre an artist!!! just beautiful!!

i just saw at Hobby Lobby gumpaste flowers that you can buy .. 4 small roses/calle lillies for about $6... i noted that to myself whenever i was in a bind for time.

i'd get ready for a lot of leads with this cake~

It is beautiful, elegant and unique and not too fussy, which I think is an ideal when you do a cake for display since many people like a less cluttered look and this could also have a more cluttered look with added decorations for those that prefer a more Victorian theme. So I think you would find this would appeal to a wide variety of folks.
Your work is always perfect kiddo!

Your cake is lovely.

I am curious why you chose green. Do you get a lot of orders for green wedding cakes?

Thanks everyone; I do appreciate the encouragement. icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif I picked green because I wanted to show off the filigree lace, and I didn't think they'd pop as much on a white cake. Actually, the cake wasn't supposed to be as green as it was...it was supposed to be very slight, but alas, I used way too much coloring. Ironically, I liked how fresh the green looked, so I decided to go with it. I doubt I'd have a ton of orders for green wedding cakes, but I guess it's ok to show peole the possibilities other than white. I've got a few white cakes on display already, so I thought it'd be good to take a litte departure from the white.

I know how you feel about getting nervous when you don't get any comments on a cake. I have several in the galleries that have one or no comments, and I start thinking, hmm... maybe I'm not so good after all. Then I try to tell myself that there are SOOO many pics on this site, there will be pics that just plain get overlooked from time to time.

Rest assured, your cake is fantastic! I love the green, it is very fresh, like you said. thumbs_up.gif Best of luck promoting your wonderful talents at the craft show!!

OK, please don't punch me out people. Let me start off by saying I love everything about your cake except one thing. The color is gorgeous, the sizes of tiers are great, the lace and grapes are great, but the first thing I notice that doesn't match the vibe are the roses. I think they might be too big, and are quite flat. The ones on the top are bigger than the bunches of grapes, and that throws off the symmetry I think. Since you did not make them I don't feel bad about commenting on them. Please don't hate me!

LOL...izzy, don't worry....I wouldn't extend a cyber punch if I could. I appreciate the feedback. So what would you do to make it better? Would you change the roses to another flower? Would you pitch the flower idea all together?
I have calla lilies (small and medium ones), and just a basic white flower, but they have off color leaves.
I appreciate when people are speaking truthfully about their opinions....it's better than blowing smoke, believe me.

You know, I never look at the cakes in the galleries, just not a habit of mine. But if someone posts a picture in a General Post or makes mention of a cake they just posted and it isn't 20 or 30 of them that they just posted, I do go and take a look or post under there picture here in the messages. Perhaps a lot of people are like me. I think you do wonderful work kiddo, but right now I am having some computer issues so I am checking the posts while I can before I get bumped out of the internet yet again. When this problem clears up I will go and take a look at your cakes though. Don't feel that because people didn't take a moment to post a comment that your work is not up to snuff, it is just people's habits and they don't mean anything by it.

Your cake is beautiful as always. I'm like Squirrelly and I don't really look into the gallery unless I'm looking for an idea or something really catches my eye. Also, people upload pictures so quickly that a cake might get bumped off the recent upload list without anyone seeing it.

If you have time, I like the idea of the flowers but I think you need to decide what you want to focus on. I love the bunches of grapes, and since they are similar in color to the cake, maybe some small sprays of daintier flowers keeping in line with the dainty lace? Just a thought. Are your callas small because the touch of yellow I think would be gorgeous with the colors in the grapes. I used to be an interior architect in a former life so I tend to look at things as whole compositions with shape size and color.
