I haven't had any problems with cutting through the cellophane that I've noticed (when cutting cakes). I'll have to keep my eye on that, though. icon_wink.gif Thanks! I've checked my local dollar stores and they don't carry the contact paper... I've searched and searched.

Not sure if any stores still have it, we just ran out, but check your local Hallmarks for wrapping paper. We just ran a special for 49cent roll wrap. There were some REALLY gorgeous foil ones that can be used year round. I bought a bunch because the are the same length/quality as our regular Hallmark paper. I thought I was in heaven when I started putting it out. lol

Also, check after Christmas for the big sales on roll wrap. You will find some very sturdy cellophane on sale then. I use it for covering cookie bouquets & baskets & can usually stock up for a few months after Christmas for just a few dollars.

I love masonite boards for heavier cakes! So much better than cardboard!!

Masonite is great but when you get into the really heavy cakes you are better off with 1/2 to 3/4 inch plywood as it can support much more weight.

Is there anything else that I can cover the wrapping paper with because I CANNOT find any contact paper anywhere. Well...Clear contact paper is what I can't find. I really want to cover my next big cake with wrapping paper but I don't know what else to use. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then cellophane it is? Just make sure they don't use a serrated knife to cut the cake and the cellophane will hold up as was suggested I think, earlier on this post. If you don't cut really hard, it is fine!

I found out the hard way. I used to cover my boards in wrapping paper and clear contact. I work for an attorney and he pulled me aside and told me that I can be sued because if someone is alergic to glue they could have a reaction. He said food can NOT come in contact with something unless its states approved for food by the FDA. I now use the clear celophane at Michaels. Be careful because the color ones do NOT say food safe. I personally think its a judgement call but working for attorneys they tend to scare you. I have not had problems with the clear ripping when cutting the cake.

Thanks a bunch. But where would I find that. To be completely honest with you, I had never heard of Celophane before seeing it on this post. But thanks for the quick responses.

Well, I can see him worrying as an attorney but the shelf liner is recommended for use on kitchen shelves and I cannot see how the glue would have contact because it is the part on the paper. But if that is an issue then the way the foil is attached to the covered boards you purchase already covered would also be an issue. The shelf liner is food safe. But glue allergy safe, well I would think that is something you cannot get away from. But as a lawyer heck anything is a cause for liability issues, I can see that!
The cellophane is something that is clear and usually used to wrap around, say a basket of fruit or perfume, usually tied in the centre with a bow. Does that sound familar?

Ok, I know this is about to be a really crazy and dumb question but its only because I'm desperate. Do you think covering the wrapping paper with Wax Paper will work. I can't find ANY clear contact paper or Celophane. I am really desperate. Do you think that if I taped it down real good it would work? Please help?

Did you look in the wrapping paper section? That is where I find mine... on a roll like wrapping paper. You could use wax paper but I don't think it would look as nice. I had a hard time finding clear contact too!

Well, what about the clear plastic that is on a huge roll, that they sell to use as drop cloths when you are painting? That should be available at a hardware (ironmonger store I believe is the old term in Germany or Europe) or a building supply store.
Another nice thing to use is what they used to call "oilcloth", it is sort of a vinyl and people would use it to upholster kitchen chairs or cut it for tablecloths, in the 50's. It is usually available on a wide roll, about 5-6 feet wide and they cut it off the roll for you.

how about using that new type of wrapping "paper" the mylar stuff. impervious to moisture and most of the time has two different colors one on each side. that would work wouldn't it?

Wal-Mart, Family Dollar, K-Mart, Big Lots, Roses all carry the clear contact paper and it is usually $5.00 a roll.
