you take strips of fondant and wrap it around and around to make a design? Quilling?

Yes!! Quilling! My daughter does this and it's a very beautiful art.

I've always wanted to do this on cake....so many ideas, so little time. icon_biggrin.gif

I bet you could use something like a loosened-up bobby pin to start like a fondant rose...

Here is a gumpaste quilled cross I made for a Christening cake. I rolled a piece of gumpaste, cut it out with a cross shaped cutter and let it dry completely on both sides. Cut narrow strips of gumpaste, roll or coil them, brush a tiny bit of gum glue on the back and lay in place on the dried cross shape. Let it lay in place until all of the quills are attached and completely dry. I added the seed pearls with just a dab of Elmers glue since it was for a display piece and not meant to be eaten. I later made a base with a fresh piece of gumpaste molded into a semi thick oval, made a slit mark with a sharp knife, brushed some gum glue into the slit and pressed the cross in upright. I propped a glass against the back of the cross to support it until it was completely dry.

This is what her book says about another cake similar to that one:

( cakes to dream on: pg 28 )
"to make the quilled flowers and butterfly, roll out pieces of gumpaste until very thin. next cut thin strips 1/4 inche wide. roll them, as they stand on their sides, as tightly or as loosely as you wish. to make a curl, simply lay the strip on its side and arrange into a curl. to make a teardrop shape, brush a little water on the ends and press them together, then let the loops dry on their side. to make multiple layers, such as the butterfly wings, start on the inside with the smallest loops and then attach longer loops, gluing the ends together as you add them. "

she uses gumpaste...i am sure that it can be done with fondant, but imagine it would be much more fragile. ( i would consider adding gumtex) fondant alone would also take much much longer to dry.

HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL that cake is gorgeous!! LOL

Of course, what else should be expected of Colette?

I'm going to buy a pasta roller this week and make myself make time to do some of these things. I really want to teach some cool off-the-book tricks in this Fondant & GP course that so many people feel are lacking, and this would be a great technique to show.

just look up any of the tutorials on quilling done w/ paper. (i learned by watching the Carol Duval show on HGTV

same techniques only w/ fondant or gumpaste (and we can mush up the mistakes and start over if we need to without wasting!)

really very easy to do....

just lots and lots of rolling of thin, narrow strips and then creative bending, squeezing to get the desired shape.
