What are you doing with a paper towel?

i've read several people saying to use a paper towel but I
can't find a post to tell me what to do with the paper towel
can someone tell me what you are doing with it? Thank you.

smoothing the icing on your cake. Use one without pattern print for really smooth. Or you can use a pattern print if that's the effect you want.

I've never done this, because I don't use the right frosting. From what I understand you need to use a crusting buttercream, let it crust over, then you can put your paper towel over it and smooth it out. When done right, you can't tell BC from MMF. Here's the "how-to" article, or you could search for "Viva"...people call it the viva method too. Good luck...hope that helps.

You can also use the paper towels as a kind of sculpting tool to shape crusting BC after it's on the cake. I use a recipe that crusts lightly and stays pretty flexible. You can lay the pt over the crusted BC and use other tools to shape it.
