I made this future domer cake for a 1st birthday and did a fbct. I did really well until after it had sat in the freezer 45 minutes and I had forgotten to put the last layer of frosting on, you know the color that the cake is going to be iced in. I thought, well, here goes. I put it on the cake anyway and I was really pleased with it. The first bct I did I wasn't pleased with how high the transfer sat off of the cake.

Does anyone else leave this last step off and have success??

The first one I did, I didn't feel comfortable adding the final layer of icing so I left it off. I had a heck of a time getting it off the wax paper but it turned out OK. The second one I did was thicker, and even though I don't like how high it stood on the cake it was much easier to deal with. Of course it was much smaller too.

I don't think I have ever put that last layer on. I let it sit in the freezer for just a sec & then use my spatula to smooth out the back. Pop it back in the freezer until I am ready for it & slap it on...sometimes literally! lol

I also dont like the level of the FBCT if you put the extra layer on them. I like to put a small border around them to blend them in & sometimes ice around them to blend them in completely.

I think it is really to give that smooth layer on the back & keep your FBCT from breaking when you place it on the cake. I just smooth my back so it does not sit as high.

I never put that last coat on. I know a lot of people say it prevents the transfer from breaking. However, if you overlap the various sections as you work you should not have a problem with it breaking. Once I place the image on the cake I use the same colour as the background and a large round tip to make my border. I then wait until it's crusted over and blend in the sides with a tiny piece of parchment. I think it gives a More 3-dimensional appearance this way.

Thanks Stephanie!

This is weird but true, I am now scouring the house looking for differant transfers that I want to try. I was so scared to try them but they are easy and fun to do.
