Just curious about Candy Clay. Is it basically the same as fondant? Does it mold smooth like fondant? Is it easy to mold with?

The reason i'm looking at candy clay is because I don't that much fondant ,but i want it pre-colored. so i was wondering if candy clay would work the same.

Thanks!

Hi,

i just bought candy clay to trie last week. I didnt like it it was vey stiff. Cann't compare to fondant. it was realy hard to even make a little fish out of it.
Gave it to my kids to play with. Even they didn't like it wanted me to make them their own playdough. Short, it was a waste of money and ended up in the garbage. p.s taste wasn't anything good either.
I bought it because it was on sale with a hope that it would work as good as fondant. (it was wilton's)

Hmm..Thanks i guess thats not a good option. Anyone have another option i can do to get pre-colored fondant ,but at lower quanity? If i don't then i'll have to buy the icing colors to color it with ,and thats more than i was hoping to spend.

i couldn't think anything else you could get instead of colors. but if you think of buying colors go just for basics. you know that blue and yellow make green so here is the trick. more or less you really need to get red, blue, yellow and black (if you need black at all) to make dark eyes you can easyly paint with little of instant coffee powder and one drop of water. brown the same but make the liquid less strong. icon_biggrin.gif
good luck!

Ditto on the MMF....I made it for the first time this week and it's WONDERFUL...AND VERY QUICK TO MAKE. I used it for roses...but am planning to make some small characters for different Christmas occasions in the next few weeks. I liked Satin Ice...but MMF is way cheaper and just as easy to handle. And tastes good, unlike Wilton's.

Add a little gumtex to mmf...dries WAY faster....for yhe coloring, just add it to the marshmellows and you can make a whole batch one colour! and since it's so cheap, you can make many batches before it costs as much as one package of the wilton stuff...

and...as long as its wrapped up nicely..it lasts a long time too

I think there is a recipe for candy clay in the Wilton yearbooks - corn syrup & candy melts? You could probably scale back the recipe for what you want & candy melts come in all sorts of colors!

I used the recipe for Kandy Klay off this site. Have made bows and other little things. Really liked it. I think it would be difficult to cover an entire cake; not impossible.

Are you talking about the premade Kandy Klay or the homemade Candy Clay (uses candy melts and corn syrup)?

There really isn't much of the Kandy Klay per color. They come in very small packets inside the boxes. You'd end up having to purchase several boxes to be able to really do anything with it. The few experiences I have had with it, were okay, but I wasn't all that impressed with it. It's a good product for kids to play with and eat, but I wouldn't use it that much.

If you watch the papers Michaels will have coupons from now to xmas. You can purchase fondant and colors with them.

Weither you use MMF or Wilton Fondant you will still want to add Gum-Tex as it helps the piece dry faster and makes it more strudy.

If you are looking for something to mold with, you can check out the recipe board. I asked about recipes for gumpaste, and there is one that uses geletin and powder sugar.

As far as colors... I'd use one of those coupons and get the small box of colors. It's a box of 8 basic colors and sells at Michaels for 9.99, I believe. If you use a coupon it will be $6 plus some change.

I just had to say that i love working with candy clay! you melt down 10oz. of chocolate and then add 1/3 cup light corn syrup. I usually wrap it in wax paper and let harden at room temp. for at least 3 hours before working with it. I have made chocolate bows and even roses and a couple of other flowers using the gumpaste tools. So far it has been pretty easy to work with. When you roll it out, use some powdered sugar or coco powder (depending on color of your chocolate) on your surface and rolling pin to prevent sticking. To color white chocolate, you can use candy color that you can get at Michaels.
